View Full Version : NazNet Reborn

As a result of the hard drive crash of Wednesday, April 14 all NazNet registrations and posts were lost. If NazNet was a commercial site, we'd have a backup service, but that's rather unreasonable for a non-commercial site. Beyond that, the hundreds of thousands of posts and many gigabytes of photos make it nearly impossible to back up NazNet off site.

So, we're getting a fresh start. Actually, that's not all bad is it?

For the time being, registration is "do it yourself." Please remember that we use real names on NazNet, both first and last. Also, please use standard capitalization when registering. If a few slip through who don't follow our practice, we'll just have to remove their registration so they can start over.

I don't really intend to put everything back just as it was. Still, if you see something missing, I'll be glad to hear about it and will respond as best I can.

Anyway, welcome to the reborn NazNet!

Sorry about the no caps on my name. How do I change that?

I know the server isn't emailing yet - I'll work on that tomorrow (later today).

No problem - I just fixed it - you may have to log in again, I'm not sure.

Good morning and good night!

Thanks, Scott!

While catastrophic data loss is always a HUGE downer.... it's also kind of nice to be forced to hit the reset button every now and then!

Here we go.....

It doesn't look like I'm able to add an avatar to my profile. I can add a profile pic, but not an avatar...

How many gigs of data were on the server when it went down? Roughly?

Thanks so much for the work you put in here Scott!

Somehow I feel partly responsible, as it crashed while I was posting. I have always had a fear of being the straw that broke the camels back, now its a reality. Unless someone else was posting at the same time? Denial is not just a river in Egypt!

And now I have 6 posts!

I noticed the same thing.

I, too, am curious about the hosting setup for NazNet. It would be great to get it set up somewhere with automated backups. I know Dreamhost.com hosts non-profits for free, with as much hard drive space and bandwidth as you need. And they do nightly backups in case of this sort of thing.

But that's just one option among many...

There also seems to be an issue with threads showing up as "read" or "not read." I've viewed this entire forum, but it still shows up blue on the main community page. There is no "mark forum read" option in the thread tools.

And it's already fixed. We now have a "mark forums read" option. Way to go!

Ryan, I only saw it when I uploaded it as profile picture. I don't know if that's a glitch or a setting?

Not Ryan, but I'll try.

Edit: It works!

I have NazNet Central on line.

Don't worry too much about spammers. They may get a few posts in before they are blocked, but it's really no big deal. If you get some personal messages from someone let me know and I'll block them when I can. At this point, it's easier to let people sign themselves back in. Once some more of our lost sheep come home we'll to back to moderator approval.

Other duties are calling (screaming) - more to come.

Thanks for the suggestion. It may be a surprise, but NazNet.Com isn't a nonprofit. It doesn't make a profit, but does not qualify as a nonprofit.

Hi, just posting to let you all know that I'm here, too!! It seems as though we have had a death in our NazNet Family. First, denial, then grieving, then acceptance. But, I'm happy to know that we can all continue to carry on with our lives until someday we will arrive at our final home in heaven.

Thank you for being here NazNet!

Probably won't work, but is there a way to make a contribution to the upkeep...or maybe to those who've worked hard to bring NazNet back on line? Just wondering.

Lots of progress overnight last night and today. I think that since we're up and running that I can lower the effort level and focus on other, real life, concerns. Again, I don't intend to rebuild the server to match what it was before. Through the years I added a number of enhancements that might or might not have made NazNet a more enjoyable experience. If you are missing a feature please let me know. I won't promise it'll be back but I'd rather add stuff back that, say 5 or 10 people miss and will use than my just loading things down.

This is the thread for reporting problems. Today I saw comments in other threads about items and I tried to respond to issues as I was able. I intend to keep an eye on this thread, but won't promise to always see comments in other threads.

I was wondering if we're going to have to do the image verification on posts for good now. I'm willing to do it to keep spam away, but it does require extra work for every post. Didn't we have image verification for registration before.

Also, I noticed that the reputation point total when you hit settings is not the same total you get when you move the cursor over the green bars on posts. Not that this is important, it just seems odd that they aren't the same (and I'm a bit OCD).

Being reborn ... Wow ... reminds of the scene as Starship Enterprise travels aways from the new planet Genesis, Dr. McCoy asks Admiral Kirk, "Jim, how do you feel?" Jim rsponds, "I feel young as when the world was new."

Can anyone share some information about the hosting setup for Naznet? It looks like Naznet is hosted on Microsoft IIS instead of Linux and Apache. With Linux it's actually quite trivial to setup automated and encrypted backups to something like Amazon S3. The cost is only $0.15/GB so a 100GB would only cost $15/mo..

Would you want to switch to Linux hosting? Not only would it be easier to manage, it would cost about half the price in most cases. Either way, let me know if you want help setting up automated backups.

For a look at naznet from the beginning on up there are many pages archived on the wayback machine. Some pages the posts are even archived. Its spotty coverage but interesting to see the evolution of Naznet. http://www.archive.org/web/web.php . Search Naznet.com in the search box.

I'm not sure which part of my post you were referring to, but the reputation math is still off. Again, this seems like a small problem, but my OCD tendencies lead me to complain.
