View Full Version : tomorrow my ISP year ends. NOW WHAT?

Yes, I've been checking other ones; this one bugs me ... I disabled their "bartshell-something-or-other," but I'm still not sure if that has something to do with its slowness, or what, but I didn't need their "junk" all over my page, along with this browser ... cuts down on usable space.

Anyway, I'm not so sure about DSL (tho' faster would be nicer than dial-up), since I've heard that it takes a certain phone line (an older house, having no phone updates in "eons," we wouldn't have it, I'd guess)---DOES IT?---so one can use both the phone & computer at once. You see, there's this one ISP that says just $14.95/mo for a year (after that, it would probably have to be back to dial-up, barring their prices going down, as it goes up after a year ... or some miracle re $$).

These are the dial-ups I've reluctantly narrowed it down to, therefore. ANYONE know anything about these particular ones, good or bad??

JUNO -- now $6.95 rather than $9.95 for a limited time (I'd snag it for a year again, if it were good, so as to not have to bother this hassle again for awihle). Have heard good & bad in the past; has it improved, or is it still bad?

ISP.com -- $8.95/mo ... don't recall hearing of it before.

TRITON.com/net (don't recall--com or net--but I tried them a few months before this last year's worth of one I don't want again) -- there's a local office; they seemed a mite slow, too, sometimes. Not sure if they've sped up, or ...?? 'Seems I've heard that they have places all over, too, but there is a local MI # and address in the phone book. Learned of them when browsing the newest mall not long after I was here, and they had a booth.

Or, aren't many here even dialed in nowadays, so you don't know about these? ANY HELP ... quickly (tomorrow at midnight, I have to either find another "trial basis" one while I continue to look---one I've not already done a trial with---or just pay someone for a month, I guess, and then maybe figure who to use for a year??).

THANKS MUCH!! Oh, yeah ... of course I'd like to hear about something else, too, other than these three, if you know about them. 'Seems like there was some other name I found last year when looking that I somehow missed this time, but I cannot recall what it was named.

... it seems, that I know better than to re-sign with them ... I just signed back on for the 4th or 5th time in a rather short while, after being kicked off several times!! Grrrrrrrrrr!! :basic04

OK, since posting this, I've had to sign back on another three times! They're making sure ... and it's not from lack of activity; I've been DL'ing pics to see them a bit bigger than the tiny ones that are on the web. Hmmmmmmmmm ... definitely don't want them again. It's not the first time this has happened, but it's odd that it did so many times just before it runs out ...........

You might also look at People PC.

I also got a CD in the mail this week offering to "welcome me back" for $6.95 per month for dialup.

Dave (up for a pit stop, I am ;)),

You wouldn't believe (well, you probably would) that they're the ones that I've sworn were even slower than the Triton I'd tried for awhile before this. Yes, it's been PeoplePC all this last year. Oh, my! Now what? (where's the little head-scratching smiley? ;))

Thank you, anyway, Dave. 'Know what? $6.95/mo for PeoplePC? That makes me "bummed" to know my $8 (nearly $9) rather than $9.95/mo for paying ahead for a year wasn't so great, afterall! They haven't asked me back for $6.95! (no, I haven't used their customer service and complained; I just grouse here to myself ... or on NN occasionally ;)) Think they just rather "forget aboutcha" if they've already got your money. They might ask me back after they realize I didn't pay for another year, huh? But that would take a month or two, so I have to find something rather quickly, in the meantime. 'Been looking ... guess I should've asked before it got down to the wire, huh? (less than 24 hrs left now!)

In our area, verizon dsl is only 19.95 a month and you are always on. Plus you can use the phone also. Another thought is to see if you have something like MetroPcs cell phone service where all calls, long distance too, are free. No limit on minutes. Text messaging too.

We weighed each option:
having home phone and internet service with one company (verizon here)
having cell phones and internet service with 2 different companies

and have found the latter to be the best price.

just my 2 cents

Terri, I'd do that if it wasn't for Ma not even wanting to try another phone company. Afterall, she's had the same company for over 50 years ... tho' it's not really been, changing its name every so often. So, I can't go with some package deal, tho' there is this house phone here, I have my cell, and need ISP, too. Tho't about it, believe me! Won't work here in this household ....

Have you thought about Netzero?

NetZero- Free Dial Up Internet Service - High Speed ISP - Net Zero Internet Provider - Netzero.com (http://www.netzero.net/)

I've heard good things about their dialup service -- don't know if it is the same all over the country, but I have a friend who used them for years and years before getting cable......

understandable. pretty soon you will be able to just plug into your cell :basic05

One would need more "anytime" minutes, however, to not have their cell phone bill go waaaaaaaay up, eh!

So, anyway, looks like I'm paying a "monthly" to PeoplePC this month, since I'm not on another and have logged in on their ISP past the 3rd. ;)

I know people in my area who have peoplepc; however the dial up can be slow and I don't think that attachments do very well. Its only $9.95 per month.

I have another friend who uses netzero. I think it does ok for her, but I think she mostly uses her computer at home for email. I'm not sure about the speed.

Juno is another option. Or, one of the cheaper aol plans. Also, I think that msn has a dial up plan for about $10.

Of course, any dial-up connection is going to be slow.

Good luck!~
