I spent a delightful spring day exploring Coronado Island. The first photo requires a disclaimer. This poignant statue is a new addition to the
USS Midway berthed in San Diego Harbor. Hope you enjoy the sailing and gardens as much as did I when photographing them

This next set are photos of exquiste flower gardens which line the
front yards of many of the homes on Coronado Island, and the
famous historic hotel...Hotel Del Coronado and a child catching
the wind with her kite

You were right by the memorial to Rear Admiral Clifton Sprague and the Battle off Samar in the Battle of the Leyte Gulf. It was the largest Naval battle in history and my uncle was in the worst part of it. Here is a picture of him, his daughter and me by the memorial to his ship. His ship has the most battle stars of any of the ships in that memorial.

The USS Midway was my last Navy ship. I also took part of my survival training and counter-insurgency training on Coronado Island before going to Vietnam. Thanks for the memories.

The statue of the sailor and the nurse is based on a picture I remember being published in Life magazine taken on the day WWII ended in New York City.

You certainly are going to be in a beautiful place this time. Hope you don't work too much and are able to enjoy it.

I stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado once, I think. Isn't that the one where "Some Like it Hot" was filmed, starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe? They also bragged about their original electrical wiring having been installed by Thomas Edison himself. ;-)
And they had an in-house TV channel that played nothing but "Some Like It Hot" around the clock. ;-)
Great hotel, though, right on the beach.
