Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more,
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.
Blue of the Seven Seas; gold of God's great sun
Let these our colors be till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true, with honor over, honor over all.

Judy, I know it is customary for all the occupants to be topside upon leaving port, is there any goodbye waves or is it standing at attention all the way out? It sure is beautiful, but sobering as well, you never know what the future holds.

Thanks for sharing your photos! My husband was stationed in San Diego in the late 70's and it brought back memories when he saw your photos!

Bob
They were all standing at attention..Glenn Harris or Bob Wright
could better address your question..and I agree, it was a somber occasion, for all watching, especially for the families involved.

From 1975 -1978 I was in Naples Italy. We (my first husband and I) served many a navy man an American meal at our home.
Here are a few pictures of the USS Nimitz I think in 1976. We met CDR. L.W. Smith who became Admiral Leighton Smith years later. He invited us on board the Nimitz for Thanksgiving and another time for a tour while they were anchored in the Bay of Naples. It was a privilege to have the grand tour a great time and so exciting. You didn't by any chance know of him, did you?
This was the first time I became aware of our Navy personnell overseas and learned to appreciate them.

Your reply deserves more than a mere thanks
What a memory!! Thank you for scanning your photos and sharing your magic moment with us..
in reply..the only Navy persons of higher rank and visibility I know personally are two of the POW's who flew
fighter planes over Vietnam and spent years and years as prisoners in a prison in Hanoi..they are my heroes

Hans was gracious and passed this note to me..i also had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, maybe i was sad for
the moms and sweethearts of those on the NIMITZ as she gallantly departed Sad Diego for the Persian Gulf. I am not sure how this mother living in NY found my Naznet post, however am glad she did.
Judy, if you get this message I just want to thank you for putting the pictures of the Nimitz on this site. My son is on that ship and this is his first deployment and I have been a wreck since Monday (the 2nd). When I came across this website and saw the pictures I cried. Tears of sadness but also tears of such pride...I had no idea what went on that day. I wish that I could have been there but I am from western New York and it was an impossible trip. Your pictures helped me a great deal. If you have any others I would be interested in seeing those as well. Thank you again. My name is Lisa --------. Thank you!

Thanks Judy for posting those pictures. Just today, we were on Nimitz Street in Millington. They named the streets things like that there. A young guy came to church on a bicycle, and we took him home.
Of course, Millington is a Naval town.

Iran may be the greatest crisis of modern times (http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=PIL20070412&articleId=5366)
We are being led towards perhaps the most serious crisis in modern history as the Bush-Cheney-Blair “long war” edges closer to Iran for no reason other than that nation’s independence from rapacious America.
Where is the Nimitz? (http://www.naznet.com/community/showthread.php?t=10661)
What happened to the Iranians.
Recent publication reveals that Zibgniew Brzezinski, Jimmy Carter, and others incited Saddam Hussein to attack Iran through then Jordanian King Hussein I bin Talal. 4 Details. (http://www.prosefights.org/nmlegal/voidjudgments/voidjudgments.htm#brzezinski)

Hello Mr Payne
This forum is dedicated to photography and your response seems to belong on the Current Event forum of Naznet.
As the photographer of these
photos I want to clarify that in photographing the Naval tradition, the "Manning of the Rails" (http://heyjude.smugmug.com/gallery/2658378) of the men and women during the solemn departure of the NIMITZ was to give them due honor, and to impart to them the ancient prayer "God Speed" (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Godspeed) and to thank them for their service to the United States for placing their lives at risk to maintain yours and my freedom (http://heyjude.smugmug.com/gallery/515636/1/22138554/Large)
This thread unlike many of the threads I place on Naznet is not intended to make a political statement.
Regards from a fellow senior citizen (http://heyjude.smugmug.com/gallery/337718/1/23478364/Large)
