John you asked where I was when taking this (http://heyjude.smugmug.com/gallery/2648758/1/138080417/Large) photo and i could not provide an answer as at the time I took the pic I was throughly lost. Yesterday afternoon I was on a mission to find the place of the Kodak Moment in the photo. Looking on a map I knew I took the photo in question while on a road leading to Cabrillo National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/cabr/) In keeping with my indigenous nature I somehow managed to lock my car keys in the trunk of the car. (no surprise?) Fortunately this happened about 15 minutes before the park closed and I was able to use their phone to call AAA auto Club. In my locked car along with the keys was my cell phone, jacket and my camera. I was happy I had taken couple of photos before this latest "lock-the-keys-in-the -trunk" event took place. (see photos below)

The Park Rangers assured me that help was on the way and they ALL left at quittin' time, leaving me alone at the top of the monument. They also informed me that the Park is located in between the Third Fleet Naval Base (http://www.cnrsw.navy.mil/subase2/index.asp) and with the closing of the Park, I am now a part of this Naval Base. This is good and could be not so good. The good was that after nearly an hour of waiting, a fine looking sailor in a Military SUV located me. Using his cell phone, I called the auto club to check on the status of the locksmith. He was hopelessly lost, wandering somewhere around the
Sunset Cliffs (http://www.sierraclub.org/specialplace/yourplaces/sunsetcliffs.asp) as info on the link provides, he was miles from where I was stranded. The Sailor (with some trepidation) allowed me to warm up a bit in his vehicle (this was clearly against regs as I noted the LARGE automatic rifle in the car). However in keeping with the Navy to the rescue, after a series of conversations with the hopelessly lost locksmith, my new Sailor friend drove down to the Base Entrance Gate and escorted him to me and my lonely car.

So ..I enjoyed meeting the sailor (he hails from Dallas, my teen years stomping grounds) and the view was lovely and enjoyable, as much as possible with a brisk wind chill. I was sad my camera (and jacket) was in the car, however was very grateful I did not have two little girls in tow. Having shared this with you,
I have decided it may be best to not share this little event with Shannon and Tom, at least not until Hannah and Hayley are grown and living on their own.

this first photo was taken from inside the visitors center, with the glass providing a bit of a filter. The next two were taken outside

Judy, now it makes sense. The very first picture (showing the marina) could fool one into thinking it was a view from the Coronado bridge (an area called Glorietta Bay) - the height and angle are righ for that.

However, to get such a shot, you'd have to stop on the bridge (at considerable risk to life and property).

Cabrillo would give both the height and angle. From that point looking east you're looking over two parts of San Diego Bay with downtown in the background.

Have been going to SD for nearly 40 years now. With my son's being at Pt. Loma and then moving to El Cajon, I've had the opportunity to get lost in several parts of town.

Judy,

In the first pic did you notice the cross hanging over the city - in the clouds on the right third side of the pic? Must have been a reflection in the window you shot through though it seems odd that nothing else appears to be reflected.

Has that ever stopped her before, John?

Being familiar with San Diego, I can't think of what that would be a reflection of. A cross would not be uncommon in San Diego but that base of that cross is what gets me. It's not the reflection of a church building, mountain, or restaurant tower. The very base of that tall cross looks like a cloud plume. So strange! I noticed that image when you first posted it but thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me.

This was taken with a digital camera, right? Any chance of a double exposure?

Not sure exactly what it is, Judy. It almost certainly had to have got there as a reflection in the window that you shot through.

I've enlarged it as best I can. It appears to be a cross on top of a tower which in turn sits on top a steep but flat-topped hill or mountain.

Perhaps it was on a picture hanging in the room behind you?? But why nothing else got reflected is anyone's guess as well.

I have come to the conclusion that this is the angel watching over me when I pick up my camera and head out the door:fav18

and Dana...be nice..as i have met you and can tell that
when you and your new camera are on an outing
you have some of my frailties. You may have an
occasion to eat your words

however as a PS
I do resemble Dana's remark as I cease to be amazed with the precarious places my camera has drug me and now two men toting large automatic weapons.
The Navy guy was much nicer than the guy guarding our US Capitol.

After taking another look at the pix that showed the cross, the cross seems to be rising out of some cylindrical tower similar to the ones you see at places like Sea World or Magic Mountain (or in about 15 million other places across the US.

I was just thinking that with a bit of enhancement you could put it on e-bay as an appearance of the Virgin Mary (after all, if she could appear on a slice of pizza or a screen door, she shouldn't look down her nose at the San Diego skyline. Run that flag up the pole and see who salutes it.

I agree it looks like a restaurant tower as I mentioned in my post above. There's not one in San Diego though. I showed the thread to my San Diegan sister and she could not figure out what it would've have been a reflection of. In fact, she didn't think it was a reflection at all.

Hmmm, maybe the Lord was showing He was watching over you the day you were lost Judy. :fav03

The Lord does watch over His daughter, however I was not lost on this day Andrea..just stranded and alone, locked out of my car. The locksmith was the person who was lost:basic04

It is clearly not a cloud formation. I don't think a double exposure is possible with an electronic camera. Even with a standard camera, it would be quite difficult to achieve a selective double exposure like that. While I believe in miracles, I am inclined to think that this is not one of them.

It does not have to be a reflection of something that exists in San Diego. Nor does it have to represent a real place. I searched hundreds of GOOGLEd images to see if I could find such a cross / tower combination and came up blank. It could be a piece of artwork of some kind that was hanging on the wall behind Judy when she took the picture. Lighting could have been just right to cause that part of the work to reflect in the window.

I'm surprised that other people have not tried to make sense of it.
