One of the challenges to fixing some Windows problems is that one doesn't know the terminology for even doing a decent internet search on it.

I had a strange one -- it had to do with the incorrect icon appearing on the address bar and on bookmarked favorites.

I had the icon on the left instead of the one on the right.

I had no idea what to call those icons -- and over the past months I had spent my spare time trying to find the problem and fix it.

I found the icon on the right called the "e icon" so that helped a bit -- but I couldn't find how to get it back from that blank page icon.

This morning I stumbled onto a website with that graphic -- I followed the instructions on this web page:

No luck. However, it had me in the right part of the registry, and just a couple of keys down I saw a "defaulticon" entry that didn't look right. That was the one.

Not a great victory, but the end of a bit of a frustration for me!

While on the subject of Icons...

Many people have complained that their favicons (those custom icons that come when you bookmark a website to your favorites) have a tendency to disappear.

I found this little utility that goes through your favorites and checks on the website to see if there is a favicon for that site -- and automatically updates the bookmark. Pretty nifty.

Note: I have never used anything else from that website and make no promises that anything else there is worth downloading!
