I wrote a short review for another website, but I saw Mike Schutz today and he asked me to review this movie here, so I'll just cut and paste for now.

The only reason I can write a review of this movie is because the second one was so awful, this one could not help but be an improvement.

This episode in the series (and the ending suggests there may be more to come) certainly has a more discernible plot and was far more engaging than the second volume. While it's script didn't come close to the original, the budget was sufficiently increased from the sequel last year to actually hire a professional editor and get the cinematographer into AA.

I was more engaged in this movie, as there was a lot of events and characters to keep up with. I only rolled my eyes once, near the end, and that small event was overshadowed by some incredible special effects with massive fight scenes and one killer finale.

Overall it was entertaining and Kiera Knightly had massively increased screen time, which never hurts. While it won't be winning any of the big awards, it was entertaining, a marked improvement over last summer.

To expand a little on the above. Obviously sequels need to be compared to the original. In this case, the script and the intelligent humor of the original made the movie. In this third edition, the special effects rule the day.

However, it was a much better movie than the second and if there hadn't been an original Pirates movie, this one would be getting good reviews (as far as thrillers go). It's truly fun to watch and doesn't in any way drag on too long. The plot is so mixed up and involved it's hard to get bored.

It can not go without mentioning, that Johnny Depp was brilliant, as usual. He gets two thumbs up from me! :fav18 :fav18

I think I may be the only person in the world that enjoyed the second installment of these movies. What is it that people didn't like? I found it easy to follow and entertaining.

You would like it, Jeff.

I understand that I'm the movie snob here, so I won't say too much. I just thought that the second movie was way too long. Almost every scene, without fail, began about five seconds too early and ended about ten seconds too late. They could have cut a half hour from the movie just by being more judicious with their editing.

I was so bored the whole time. I know that's just an individual judgment, but that's about all I have to give. If it makes you feel any better, I saw it with a group of eight people and I was the only one who didn't absolutely love it. I guess that's why it made so much money.

...I'll admit that I loved the second movie as well. I think that Depp is a hilarious character.......I'm looking forward to taking the family to see the third movie this summer while on vacation.

Gina and I enjoyed the original and the second was good, but not as good as the first. We'll probably see the third one, but we're holding out for other summer blockbusters. What are they again? We've seen Spiderman 3, and we know about Harry Potter, Pirates 3, and Shrek 3 ... are there any others we should pay attention to?

I will join you as a person who enjoyed the second installment. As I stated before, Johnny Depp is brilliant! He needs no good script to make an entertaining movie.

My children also liked #2. EMily had Cap't Jack as her avatar. I'll tell her she can put it back. She is in good company.

Jeff, I liked #2 as well. Storywise, I couldn't follow it, but I thought the movie was hilarious. As such, I enjoyed the fun tremendously.

Watched the movie last night.

Anyway, #3 is more serious than #2. It relies more heavily on the special effects and the battle scenes, which were impressive.

As far as the final shot at the end of the movie, thanks to Wikipedia, I now understand that part of the story as well :basic05

In general, no nudity (a bare leg of Keira Knightly is as far as it goes), lots of fighting, but in a Jack Sparrow kind of way. Not really scary, perhaps the most scary moment was when Davy Jones got hold of the key of the chest that contained his heart by killing the servant of Lord Beckett.

Now the question of course, is this good entertainment? There is some magic there, some images of the afterlife that are more like Greek mythology than Christian.

My estimation is that if you tend to take things seriously, this is not a movie to go and watch. But if you can enjoy a fiction story for what it is, enjoy the humour, the great acting by Johnny Depp, a wedding in the thick of a fight, some nice CGI, you could enjoy it.

Hans, you make a good point. I have never minded a story about magic as long as it is kept in it's fictional place. I even enjoy a good ghost story on occasion because of the mystery usually involved. There are always the few who will believe the fiction and turn it into fact. Pirates has a lot of sailors yore that is based a lot in Greek Mythology. Young children will probably be confused by a lot of it, but they mostly watch the action and don't try to figure out the story.
