I love the Tolkien Lord of the Rings trilogy, but not so much that I went on a hunger strike when Peter Jackson (director of the movie) completely left out the Tom Bombadil character. (!!!)

The extended edition seems to actually be the full-length movie tailored to the true fans who are not cowed by a movie nearly four hours in length. The 'added' scenes are not mere outtakes, but are just as well produced and well acted as the scenes from the original theatrical version.

Like the book, the extended edition takes some time to swing into action and the pace seems to drag at times. I appreciated the additional development of Aragorn's reluctance to take on his 'appointed' role of heir to the throne.

The scene in which Galadriel gives each of the members of the fellowship a gift was a nice touch. The omission of this scene in the theatrical version required a flashback scene in the Return of the King to explain where Frodo got the vial that lights up in 'dark places'.

Overall, the movie is great, the extended edition provides more depth to the already huge story - much to the appreciation of the true Tolkien fans.

There was no option for us but to get the extended editions - for one my husband was one of the many crazy folk who paid to get their name listed at the end of the extended editions.

We've seen the extended so much I don't remember what isn't in the movie version.
