Jeremy's post on The Princess Bride made me decide to post a review of my favorite movie.

Number one on my list is, The Pistol.

The Pistol traces the eighth grade year of, "Pistol Pete" Maravich.

The movie combines many different elements.

It's a sports movie with scenes from the big games...

It's a coming of age movie as Pete grows up. His talents begin to get noticed, he deals with a bully, he begins to take interest in girls, etc.

It's a movie about the father-son relationship.

It's a movie about race relations since Pete attends a segregated school and is confronted with some issues that result.

It's a movie about change as his style and his coach's aren't a "natural" fit.

It's inspirational as it deals with having a dream and going for it.

If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend that you do!

In conversation with my one of the men in my church I shared how this was my favorite movie. At some point, I mentioned that I had an old VHS of the movie.

For my birthday last month, he surprised me with a DVD of the movie. It was the "Inspirational Edition" and includes nearly an hour of Pete sharing his testimony at some event.

If you are going to run out and buy the movie based on my review, I'd recommend buying this particular edition for the special features. :)

(For those who don't know, Pete Maravich died during a pick-up basketball game at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene. He was in town doing a Dobson radio program.)

After all these years, Pete:

Holds NCAA career record for most points (3,667, 44.2 ppg, three-year career) in 83 games
Holds NCAA career record for highest points per game average (44.2 ppg)
Holds NCAA record for most field goals made (1,387) and attempted (3,166)
Holds NCAA record for most free throws made (893) and attempted (1,152)
Holds NCAA record for most games scoring at least 50 points (28)
Holds NCAA single-season record for most points (1,381) and highest per game average (44.5 ppg) in 1970
Holds NCAA single-season record for most field goals made (522) and attempted (1,168) in 1970
Holds NCAA single-season record for most games scoring at least 50 points (10) in 1970
Holds NCAA single-game record for most free throws made (30 of 31) against Oregon State on Dec. 22, 1969

Maybe this review warrants a repeat on the "Sports" forum, eh? ;)
