It seems that for every movie about firefighters, there are 300 about police officers. I suppose it is easier to stage car chases and interrogations than to burn down large buildings.

Thus, I enjoy firefighter movies, of which Ladder 49 is only the second that I have seen. (first one was Backdraft)

If you like movies that defy Hollywood formulas, you will like this one.

The story starts with a firefighter who helps rescue someone from a burning industrial building, but then becomes trapped. While waiting for rescue, the main character has a number of flashbacks that trace his life and career as a firefighter.

I enjoyed the movie, but I put it in the category of 'movies that force you to wrestle with where the story goes.'

I concur.

(I've also seen John Wayne's movie as the oil rig firefighter. Then there was the one about the forest fire jumpers... Do those count?)

I liked this one as well. It was surprisingly good. I usually enjoy John Travolta movies, although they are rarely top-notch in quality. This one was pretty well done and well worth the viewing.

Yes, there is a movie entitled 'Always' in which the main character fights forest fires. I have seen it, but it's in the chick-flick category, so I have blocked it out.

Didn't Howie Long do a movie where he parachutes into the middle of a forest fire? I bet that was awful.
