Since Hans has returned from his hiatus and this article appeared in the most recent Time magazine, I thought it would be appropriate to throw it up for discussion. There are some interesting ideas here. It sure seems like The Netherlands has a good handle on this problem.

Very good article yes the Dutch do seem to have it together. I am sadly seeing, and will join em soon, people from my mission struggling to live on their pensions, not nice way to live out our twilight years.

Yes, they do. I like the idea that only part of my income at retirement is funded by the government, the other part is paid by a pension fund (in my case, of the housing corporations). It is almost guaranteed money and has been put aside and invested, so when we all start getting grey, the Dutch won't have as many problems as their neighbours who depend on a system where those that are working now provide for the pensions of those who are retired now. With less people working and more getting retired, there are bound to be some problems there. Not that we won't have some, but they won't hit half as hard as elsewhere.

Old preachers never retire, they just do pulpit supply until they keel over dead in front of the communion table.

So I'm not banking on retirement money from any source.

Retired pastors need income, also. They still have grown children that need someone to beg or borrow money from. If our country's economy stays strong, we don't have to worry over income. If it falls, all of our sources of income may fall also--like the great depression and bank closures in 1929. In 2nd Corinthians, Chapter 9, we see that God believes in taking care of his children that give to help others over the years. And, it is not just one of the modern day prosperity messages.
