My wife learned the hard way that the self-cleaning feature of an oven should only be started when the oven is at room temperature. During that ill-fated process an old spill in the oven caught fire...and it's impossible to open the oven during the cleaning cycle. Fortunately the small fire went out on its own.

So, does anybody know whether the self-cleaning feature is now ruined?

Tina (my wife) lurks here, but you can still be honest. :basic05

I don't think it is ruined.

You should be ok. What does the spot look like?

There is a spot in the middle of the oven that looks like burned food or something, but the scorched material seems more like plastic. The part that was actually on fire looks okay. It wasn't the heating element. (electric oven)

Tina tried using it earlier today and it started smoking so she turned it off. It was also smoking before the small disaster, which is why she ran the self-cleaning cycle.

I wouls say that if the finish does not looked burned off completely you should be alright. Ovens can usually take more heat then we use. Think of it as a teflon pan. When that starts to flake, time for a new pan. She could give it a light wipe up with water/ baking soda to pick uip residue. Then it might not smoke. If it still smokes you might need someone to look at it. It might be something else.

We had a repairman look at it, and he said it was okay...just to wipe out the excess spillage and then run the self-cleaning cycle starting at room temperature. This of course is information right out of the instruction manual.

Considering that the stove is the most dangerous appliance in the house, we didn't want to take any chances.

The oven now looks as good as new. Go figure...
