Carmel Valley on a foggy Day

The conditions for ground fog are interesting in that the ground is probably frozen or almost frozen and a warm, more moist air mass moves in so that there is condensation from about 2 feet above the ground up to about 4 feet but above that point the warmer air is not affected above that. In a sense the fog acts as an insulator between the cold ground and the air above 4 feet. Such conditions have contributed to many highway accidents so that by the time emergency personel arrive they are left wondering why the accident occured when in the intervening time the fog is gone and it appears to be a clear day.
