I just saw on CNN that "Ugly Betty" got 11 Emmy nominations. Can somebody please tell me what I'm missing? I watched the show a couple of times and thought it was stupid.:fav03

I like Ugly Betty and don't really know why. I think it appeals to the working class and also has the ugly duckling aspect that draws people. I didn't care for some of the story lines toward the end of the season but by that time I was already wrapped up in the characters and was hooked.

Agreed that some of the story lines got rather weird, but by that time I, too, wanted to see what happened to "Ugly Betty," because she was trying so hard to bring some sanity into this place that was full of shallow people, for the most part, concerned with the exterior only.
Yes, there were some "stupid" things that happened now & then ("were" b/c it's on summer hiatus), and she has a rather kooky (at times) sister. But also there was, within the storyline, a father who finally decided he could accept that his kid might be different from him. Betty's sister's son, you see, was more into artistic things than sports, and at first his dad seemed disappointed, yea even embarrassed, by this.
Then---and here's a rather melodramatic part I did not like at all (why did they write such an awful thing into it? there was enough else going on already, and we would have liked to see this father-son relationship finally "take off," thank you!)---as he's on the way to finally see his son in a theatre production (about junior high age), he stops into a convenience store to get him something, a robber comes in, and he's the "hero who gets shot." So, Daddy never did see him ...............
But, basically, "Betty" was about debunking this fixation with people's exteriors, nudging people towards looking at what matters ... with some "Betty naivete' thrown in at times, too. So, I ended up watching it, as that seems a good premise to start with (in spite of some of the story lines). And when one considers what else is on network TV to pick from, well .......
You see, tho' not an avid TV fan, I sometimes enjoy chilling out in front of the "boob tube" (does that name date me?), even tho' I can't quite be a committed couch potato, and usually have to be doing something else at the same time ... whether something crafty, or having a book handy for those extremely long (muted, I might add) commercial breaks they're having these days.

I'm glad you like the show, Gina. I guess I'm more of a "Red Green" kind of guy. Keep your stick on the ice! :basic03

Speaking of "Red Green," and your now-signature, Mike, "Y'all don't really hafta change" your watchin' habits, and turn from "Red Green" to "Betty." However, their viewing times don't clash at all, so they can both be seen with ease. :basic05

Actually, yes. I'm not from da U.P., eh! :basic05
Actually, think it was even before I lived down south (then SW) for awhile that I used that "y'all." Perhaps because it seems a more neutral thing than to use something else that I've used a lot, as well ... "you guys," when it's either all, or includes, some gals as well, tho' "guys" can be as generic as "man/men."
My "southern" living (prior to SW) consisted of living/working in the DFW area. 'Know re Williams Square and Mustang Plaza in Irving, since you're in that area of TX? Those are still some of the most beautiful, graceful sculptures---in my estimation. Loved being able to see them everyday, actually ... until I ended up down in the Houston area for awhile ... Michigan friends, and ... WATER!! (not just mudpuddles ;))
'Still drink soda (tho' only about once-twice/month), too; have been gone long enough that "pop" still sounds funny, tho' I've been back awhile. :basic05

My maternal grandfather was from Kansas and he always said, "Youses," or, "Youse Guys." I used to work in Irving fairly close to Las Colinas. My cousin lives in Houston, but I don't think there's enough money to tempt me there tooo much humidity! Sorry Houstonians!
Sometimes I drink soda pop ;)!

My wife calls "Ugly Betty" the stupidest show you'll ever not be able to help but watch.

Think I'll have to agree with your wife, David. They left enough situations hanging [almost too many] when it ended the beginning of summer that I've just "got to" see how they're resolved, once the new ones come out again. ;) Tell her she's not watching alone.

No kidding! The humidity was the take-your-breath-away kind. Walking outdoors with both the temperature & humidity at about 99, well .................
It wasn't my favorite place, but I do like to not be landbound, and liked having the water (Gulf) nearby. ;)
Had I my druthers & sufficient $$$, of all the places I've lived, I'd take southern California again [not in any crowded area, BTW]; that weather was fantastic for 3.5 years!

EDIT: oops! It's not back, afterall ... they just said it begins next week. Well, tonight does seem to be a bit of this 'n that, from various shows, rather than just one show. (not that some of you care, eh! ;))
Yeah, that "stupidest show you'll ever not be able to help but watch" is back. Probably to introduce it to those who've never, ever seen it before (hey, you guys!), they're not really doing anything new. They're having flashbacks from many episodes, it appears ... to bring folks up-to-date. So probably next week is when they'll pick up those cliffhangers they left at the end of last season.
Betty's back ... Betty's back to continue her "beauty is more than skin deep" campaign ... with determination to influence the haughty, shallow folks around her for the better. ;)

I like Red Green and Ugly Betty. Don't want to know what that says about me. Eclectic maybe?

here in Columbus, Red Green runs twice on Saturday nights followed by two episodes of 'Monty Python'. Now there's two hours of silliness, which suits me fine. Of course, I also loiked 'Napoleon Dynamite'.:basic05

... with short flashbacks to all those strings it left hanging at the end of the season, the new season has started ... that program that was said last season to be something like, "The most stupid program you just can't miss!" ;)

[as in the below quote] here's what I saw the other day on a license plate that had been stuck in the back window of this car [whose real license plate said they were retired USAF]
Yoosta be a Yooper!
Since there once was a USAF base in the U.P. that closed, they perhaps had been stationed there.
