This is considered one of the late Ingmar Bergman's best movies. Filmed in 1957, in black and white, I first saw it in 1979. Saw it again today, and the impact is still significant. The quality of the black and white filming has something to do with that as well.

From a Christian point of view, perhaps indeed the simple faith of the acrobat player and his wife, who sees so much more than the desperate knight tries to see with all his reasoning, is something to ponder.
