This is one of my favorite movies and we watched it again tonight. It's director Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical portrayal of his summer as a teenage rock journalist. The band in the movie is fictional, but much of the plot was taken from Crowe's experiences touring with the Allman Brothers in 1973.
Beyond being a well directed, well acted, overall great movie, it has one of the best soundtracks in history. They spent nearly $4 million just on music rights to create the perfect mood.
There is more depth to the story than just rock stars being hedonistic. There is commentary on friendship, relationships, and the universal search for meaning. However there is also a lot of rock stars being hedonistic, so it's certainly not for small children.
