I guess, the deer did not think to kill him, the deer just liked not to see the man in his kingdom - maybe in rivalry about food. Animals often do have fine senses we humen do not know, like dogs can smell once a diabetic has forgotten his insuline and will remind to - as life savers. So it can be, the deer fights for a reason we can not know. Normally the deer would flee, but not attack a man, right? So in this case must have played a special, but not known fact a role.
