Under what circumstances would you consider donating an organ as a living donor? (kidney, portion of liver, skin, etc.)
You may choose more than one. Feel free to elaborate by replying.
Thanks.

The one part of my body that would never be used are my lungs.
They are totaly scarred from smoking and chronic asthma.
I have my card signed - so that if anything happens, they can use what ever organs they could use.
I believed in this so much that we donated Melissa cornea's.
It is kind of neat to know a child is seeing out there because of her.
Hope everyone does it.

After I'm dead and gone, any part of me worth transplanting is up for grabs. I've often considered leaving my corpse to higher education. At first I thought it might save my family some final expenses. However, after checking with a friend who is Director of Donor Relations for Ohio State, I learned that the family still is responsible for the "disposal" of the remains after I have "served my term" in higher ed.
Before my death, assuming that any part of me is worth having, I think I would have to limit my generosity to my family. If God would direct me otherwise, it would have to be with a pretty loud voice.

I chuckle to think that I thought this note was about raising money to
buy an organ for the church (and whether anyone would want one
anymore).

P.S. My pastor, John White donated a kidney to Pastor Juan Rivera, both of Lowell churches (English and Spanish), Massachusetts. Imagine the odds of them being a match! That was a few years ago and both are ministering for the Lord today because of it.

Before death - I really couldn't answer this without knowing the circumstances. On one hand I selfishly think that I wouldn't. But on the other, I know if God called me to it I couldn't refuse.
After death - What do I care?

My son is alive because someone donated to an unknown person in need.

When I saw the title of this thread, I honestly thought that someone was taking a poll on how a church should deal with the situation of someone trying to donate a musical instrument that there might not be room or need for.
Talk about a totally different paradigm!

I agree with my darling (cough, cough, wretch) brother, when I'm done using my organs, if anything is usable...use it! I've worked healthcare long enough to see so many people benefit from organ/tissue donations. And certianly for a family member I would consider a living donation. I was a blood donor for many years until the medication I take for arthitis made my blood unacceptable for donation.
Donations are not just solid organs such as hearts, lungs, kidneys but of virtually all body tissues including skin-for burns, bone, muscle, tendons, eyes, bone marrow, Pancreatic islet cells for treatment of Diabetes.
Lifeline of Ohio Organ Procurement, www.lifelineofohio.org , is just one organization that coordinates the procurement and placement of needed tissues thru-out the US. I am familiar with these folks as I have had patients whose family agreed to terminate life support and allow Lifeline to place their family member's organs/tissues wherever possible.
And on a lighter note, science tells us that stem-cells can be collected from fat cells. I am more than willing to allow my many fat cells be collected for all the stem-cells they can find.

who is not trying to start a discussion regarding stem-cell reasearch and funding!

leave my nose, so that they may find the cure for allergies, and that others may live a happier life of easy breathing!

... who, as a teen yet a few years ago, had a serious enough accident, that enough ligaments, tendons, etc were torn up in his leg that they said they couldn't mend them, but would replace some of them with "cadaver" tendons, etc. 'Sounded a bit gross to him, but guess he was glad to have them, since it helped some with walking OK again. So, yes, Mr. Hammons, they surely do use any & all parts, it appears [well, maybe not all, but a lot of 'em!] ;o)

I am very Thankful to a family that was thoughtfull enough to donate their loved one's organs. Gene has had a good almost 13 weeks of life with as close to normal kidney function as far back they can look into his medical records. The year and say 4 monthas before these weeks he was at the mercy of sitting beside a machine that "did" the kidney function for him, aka dialysis. I am thankful that dialysis is around, but think of it... filtration of the blood 12 hours a week, dialysis 3x/ week/ 4hours a time, ~vs~ kidney filteration 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As far as me donating... I have always said take anything that can be used... BUT now that I have a history of cancer... unfortunatly... they wont is what i have been told. :gen06

The dynamics of donating an organ while living are different. Obviously that excludes organs that you need for survival or quality of life. (heart, lungs, eyes, etc.)
Under what circumstances would you consider donating an organ BEFORE you are dead?

I, too, thought about the church organ thing.
There needs to be one more category. I would donate if the need arose and I could help save a life for anyone.
