A man shot by air marshal at Miami airport said he had a bomb. His wife kept crying out he was biopular and hadnt taken his medication. He was shot when reaching into the bag. What an awfull decision for that air marshall to have to make. If the man, as his wife warned everyone, was just mentaly ill, then a tragety has occured. :(

What a terrible decision the air marshall had to make. Here's the link (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051208/NATION/512080420) to the story.

The fact that the man said he had a bomb makes it fairly clear that the air marshal was not just trigger happy.

Yes, and agree, but his wife seem to have shouted warnings that he was bioplular?

As tragic as it was, according to everything I have heard and read thus far, the air marshals acted totally appropriately.
You can't tell someone you have a bomb in your bag and then reach inside the bag and not expect people charged with security to think that you're reaching in to trigger the bomb.
The air marshalls appear to have acted totally properly, and I hope that no big deal is made of this.

In this day and age, we should all know not to ever, ever, ever joke about such things. It is tragic but I understand why a threat was perceived in this case and why the air marshall acted as he did.

If it had been real, who's to say if the wife wasn't "in" on it as well?
It sounds like a really sad tragedy for the family and for the marshall's who pulled the trigger.

Ian, the air marshalls made the right decision. they are not psychotherapists, and if they were, they did not have time to do that type of investigative work. Given the terrorist climate of our world right now, when that man yelled that he had a bomb and then ran from the air marshalls, and then reached into his bag, the air marshalls responded properly. They had a plane of passengers, potential bombing victims. It is sad if what his wife said is true, and that has not been determined yet; but they still acted perperly given the circumstances.

I agree, William. Those guys have to react in a split second. They can't afford to take a risk.

I feel terrible for the air marshal who had to make this decision. Given the parameters under which they must operate, he probably had no other choice.
That doesn't change the fact that, according to the story link, a man is dead and two passengers had their luggage blown up and I don't feel one bit safer. The cost of increased secuirty is that, sometimes, innocent people must be sacrificed to achieve it.

Bruce, I'm not so sure that man was innocent. It is reported that his wife said he is bi-polar. We do not know that for a fact yet. And if someone is surounded by dozens of innocent people, and then starts yelling he has a bomb and reaches into his bag instead of obeying what these marshalls commanded him to do, I do not see there was any option in this case. This man caused others to react for the safety of the larger number of people there and if I had been there I would have told those marshalls that I appreaciated all they did. A really tough situation no matter which way we look at it, but in this case I see that the secutiry procedures worked. Where they broke down was in the country where that flight originated. I wonder if this whole situation could have been avoided it security there had been better. Yes, thisis a most tragic event, but the security measures worked well and would have made me feel better about airline safety.

The action of the air marshal was not questionable in my mind. People know not to joke or lie about these things. The air marshal just did his job. If the wife wanted them to know, she should have told them.
