we used to go to Jeromes (my son in love) moms church once in awhile. talk about dressed up! they dressed every Sunday like it was Easter! complete with white gloves and hankies! they also had nurses that sat in the back of the sanctuary that took care of those that "fell out"

My thought was, how many starving people could get meals for money those outfits cost? :(

actually, I don't know if you know this, but black churches actually take care of their communities. No one goes hungry, or can't pay their light bill, etc etc. Most black churches are still community to the community they serve. They don't get all rich and move out to the burbs so as not to have to deal with the blight. even drug dealers give utmost respect to the churches and the pastors. and vice versa. white churches could learn alot from them. most of their fancy outfits are used over and over again and well cared for. ok so they might have to buy new stockings every week, (yes the ladies most all wear stockings) but most I know of throw an extra pair in the basket for a lady that might not be able to buy new stockings.
that is how community is supposed to work.

And besides that, Ian, you cannot be sure how much they cost! 'Know where I got one of my favorite shirts that's black/white heather-type heavy cotton, and has 4-5" long real leather fringe on yoke & sleeves (& it appeared nearly new ... again; I tend to find some neat things sometimes ;)). Well, that classy-looking dressy shirt cost $1 or $2 at a thrift shop during a "this-color-tag-is-this-much" sale.

Another dressy skirt and tunic-length jacket that I only had to buy a neat knit shirt to go under it cost something like $4 or $5.

So, you can't always judge the $$$ spent by the clothes you see ... SIR! ;)

Ian,

I think you are talking about more than the black churches that Teri is talking about. The first person I can think of is Vestal Goodman. Her sequined dresses and over-the-top hair style look excessive to me. Well, it's not a problem any longer as she died this past year. I haven't watched enough of the videos to comment about the clothes of the other singers.

Having gone to many gospel "sings" in my years, I can quite assure you that these people are "for real."

Glad this is all in fun, or I was thinking of --- holding back from --- asking Ron if he was still working on that Micah thing in this signature, this statement not seeming too merciful. ;)

BTW, I too have been to many of those "all night sings" eons ago, and they're "for real." Also have been to a couple of Gaither things in my lifetime. No, make that three, since they even came to Naz churches before they became a big thing, also eons ago. ;)

Hmmm. I have alot of Gaither videos and have watched many of the Gaither videos on youtube. None of the outfits ever struk me as extravagant. Now many of the youtube videos are older and don't reflect how these artists look today.

I was being merciful by offering him some wisdom learned from painful experience. Questioning others spending and contrasting it to helping the poor is not helpful in most situations. When that urge occurs, I just bite my tongue until it bleeds.

I dressed up the other day for church. My husband said I looked like a million bucks and nearly everyone commented how wonderful I looked.

My outfit? Yep. It sure looked expensive. But I had on a pair of fancy boots I got on clearance, a 10 year old jacket also bought on clearance from a fancy department store at like 75% off and a very nice skirt I paid less than $5 for at a thrift shop.

I hope I am never guilty for assuming that a brother or sister in Christ is guilty of greed or showing off for looking nice. I would expect those artists who are making a lot of money for what they do to dress appropriate to that. So Vestal Goodman like shiny things. Good for her! So do I but I can't quite get away with sequins yet :)

I would expect that they are doing things, donating time, money and talents to helping the poor. But I've been more encourage to give quietly (that whole left hand not knowing what the right is doing thing) rather than shouting it from the rooftops. Perhaps they've heard the same sermons.

One of the men at our Church wore a full dress suit on Sunday and to be honest he stood out and looked out of place. It's kind of sad in a way.

From a logical point of view, my buying or not buying something that I really don't need has no impact on the plight of the poor.

From a biblical point of view, that is precisely the accusation that Judas made when the sinful woman broke open very expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus' feet.

From a spiritual point of view, extravagance is in the eye of the beholder. It's just a good thin that I am not the Holy Spirit.

To tell the truth, most of the time, I may be the best dressed person in our church, going a good while, without repeating myself in dressing. Many years ago, a lady much older than I was decided to tell me that she and I were the best dressed people in the church. She bought most of her clothes, by charging them, at a high price store.
I bought/buy most of my clothes at thrift stores. Many times, they still have the tags on them. For many years, I have taught our young mothers where they can save money on their young children's clothes. When they get older, they want name brands.

When we go to East Tennessee, we stop at Phillip's Shoe Store that is now in Monterey and Cookeville. Dwayne does not usually find shoes there, but I can get name brand shoes there. The most I have ever paid there is $30, and usually less.

Last week end when we were in Missouri, I wished I had already unpacked our winter clothes. I took a skirt that was just below my knees, but wished for a longer one.
We went to a Salvation Army store, and found a brand new long, lined, black skirt, in style, with the tag still on it, for $5. That is one way, I am a good steward.
The money saved can be given to others in need, put in General and Local Compassionate Ministries, etc. or used to have some fun with.

"For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me." Mark 14:7 (NASB)
As others have said, "extravagance is in the eye of the beholder." The best example of this I can think of is the brand of car that Ian and I drive. We both drive Volvos. I bought my used 2005 S40 earlier this year. I could have bought something less expensive but after a lot of research I concluded that was the car that would give me the most value for what I could afford. My point is what looks extravagant sometimes isn't. The "Homecoming" and other Gaither videos are designed to appeal to a wide audience. The performers have to dress in a way that's attractive to that audience.

I have tickets to Gaither's Homecoming Christmas concert which will be in Houston on Nov. 30 so I'll see their "outfits" for myself.

The last time I went to a Gaither deal I thought they were dressed "down" for a big concert with many of the guys wearing dress shirts with the shirt tail's not tucked in, even though they had suit jacket on. I thought they looked sloppy, not over dressed.

Unless you are thinking of Guy Penrod. He always wears a coat with tails, and very long hair too. I guess he might be said to be dressed up.
