I wanted to go see this movie because in the trailers the inviting of the schmuckiest person you can find to a special dinner seemed to fit my experience in the church around Christmas time (the only time I was ever invited to anyone's house or the only time anyone ever called me.)
I had heard that the critics weren't too thrilled about this movie, that it dehumanized people and was a shadow of the original French film which title i can't seem to find right now.
I must disagree with the critics who might be saying that this movie dehumanizes. I think that the humanity of the characters comes across quite well. This is a very funny movie, but we are not laughing at the so called "idiots" who are invited to dinner. But we are laughing at situations ultimately created by the "normal", "non-schmucks." There are more schmucks than are invited to the dinner, like the artist and Darla.
Did I already say that this movie was very funny? It was. I tend to have a different sense of humor, but I was not the only one in the theatre laughing loudly, as is oft the case. the majority of the people seated around me were laughing through the movie as well as on their way out.
I think .... No I won't say that as i don't want to give anything away for those who may go see it. But the actual dinner takes up a minority of the near two hours of delightful and mildly intelligent entertainment.
