or, Doing Ministry In The Postmodern Matrix, as the subtitle is.
"The world is changed; I can feel it in the water, I can feel it in the earth, I can smell it in the air."
This is the start of the movie "The Fellowship Of The Ring" as it hit the theaters in 2001. The movie starts quite dark, with just this voice of the elven queen Galadriel speaking these words.
If you can relate to them and agree that indeed the world is changed, or at least, is seriously changing, this is a book for you. McLaren proceeds from this premise, stating: "If you have a new world, you need a new church. You have a new world." (period). So what does that mean? What are the implications? How will you do ministry in the new world (on the other side)? And most of all, how to get there? This book is very practical in defining 13 strategies. Not all will apply to your situation, so this is very much a book to study and discuss in the light of your own predicament. Alone, or much better, with a group of people. Or with your church board and pastor. I think such enterprise would be very worthwhile.
I understand McLaren has a name for being controversial? If so, he's probably the most balanced controversial person I know. So, I would say, as Augustin heard one day, "Tolle lege", (take and read).
