Dave,

Barb, you are very observant. The concrete columns in the background are the tops of pilings. Starting at our property line on the down hill side and extending to our neighbor's property line on the uphill side there are concrete pilings that extend 40 feet into the ground. They are spaced 4 feet apart. Their purpose is to prevent any additional erosion along the shore line.

When our homes were built, 19 years go, the lots were made extra long to allow for erosion. Nine years ago, 20 feet off the back of these two lots broke off in a sudden event. A number of homes in California and Washington slid off of cliffs that year.

Can you imagine having your beautiful water front home up for sale, then having 20 feet of the landscaped area of the back yard fall into the ocean? The vaule of all of the water front homes in this area plummeted.

That is when Linda and I came along. We were able to buy this home as a BIG discount. In the contract, we required that the piles be placed along the top and a rock wall placed along the bottom of the cliff.

Anyway, our neighbor decided to extend the tops of the piles about four feet above the ground. He then placed timbers against the piles and filled in dirt to raise his yard. Because of a miscommunication, the pilings that you see in the picture were left above ground. We don't like them, but there isn't much that can be done.

The timbers you can see in the pictures are Linda's garden boxes. She grows a nice crop of onions, lettuce, and tomatoes every year.

what kind of dog is that? We have a Lhaso Apso, and she is soooo very smart, sometimes I think she is almost going to start talking to us! She even wakes us up during the night because she loves crushed ice! She is like being our kid! LOL

Great Dane!

Pammy says Lulu is a Shiorkie -- Shitzu/Yorkie mix.

Bob, if your dog is smart, I am fairly sure that Lulu isn't the same breed.

Dave, I'm sure you have insulted Belle and John David and wounded Pammy deeply. We love LuLu. Be more sensitive for their sake. :)

Maybe you could tell people those are temple ruins from the Roman era in Washington. LOL

I love the dog, too.
