View Full Version : Anyone going to the Feb 7-9 NNU conference?
Hans Deventer

At http://wesley.nnu.edu/ (it's on the top right, you have to wait for it but it will show) there is an add on a conference with Brian McLaren from February 7-9. I've been trying to contact the one who organizes the conference again, but although he replied swiftly in April, I haven't seen a reply from him to my request for more details since almost 3 weeks.
So I have the following questions: what would the cost of the conference be? I'd have to fly in from Europe, so that would already be quite an expense.
Second, anyone familiar with what they do for housing conference guests? And again, at what price?

Searching the internet I found in a newspaper article (http://www.redorbit.com/news/education/831307/conference_at_nnu_will_focus_on_holiness/index.html) that the cost of this year's conference was $ 65. With the current exchange rate, that's not too expensive :basic05. And, the article gave a name and email address of someone involved with the organisation. So that's another email address I'll be trying.

I am surprized that your are not getting a response from NNU. Remember that the school is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Perhaps they will respond on Monday.
If you will be that close, consider coming on over to Gig Harbor to spend a few days. The last time you were here you only stayed one night.
Most travel web sites don't give the flights for Southwest Airlines. It is usually the cheapest way to get from Boise (Nampa) to Seattle (Gig Harbor).

I am surprized that your are not getting a response from NNU.
So am I. Back in April, when the add first showed, I had contact with Tom Oord about it. He referred me to Jay Akkerman as the one who organized this event. Got a reply from Jay informing me he would be meeting with Brian next week. Emailed back, got another reply. This was April 9.
Since the cheap tickets start to disappear by now, I emailed him again on the 3rd of November. I'm not sure how long NNU is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but I presume not at that time yet?
On the 12th of November I asked Tom if he knew something had happened to Dr. Akkerman. He didn't and email Jay himself.
No reaction to this very day.
My conclusion is that it can't be problems with my email, he still would have gotten Tom's. So what actually is the matter, I don't know.
I found this email address from a lady who organised last year's conference in this newspaper article and I've emailed her yesterday, but I do understand I won't hear anything from her till Monday.

Dave, I really appreciate the invitation and I would absolutely look forward to visiting you and some of the magnificent sites and parks around your place, but I would be on my own this time and I'd much rather do that with Hannie and in Summer too. You are right though, it was way too short last time.
I still hope Hannie will be well enough one day to do this. Unfortunately, such isn't the case yet.

I'm going to this conference when it's in Kansas City later in April. $65 sounds about right, although I thought the cost went up after some date in November.
I didn't check out the website, but I assume this is the same series of conferences he's doing in support of his new book.

Two points:
1. Never assume anything from the absence of a response. I learned that from my days of practicing law. While common sense often leads us to conclude something from the absence of a response, there are enough exceptions that it isn't safe to do so. There are a multitude of reasons you might not have received a response.
2. Presistence pays. Keep trying different avenues. Try sending an email to Rich Hagood, the president of NNU. Ask Rich to check to see if Jay is ok. Tell him that you are concerned about Jay because he has not responded to your emails. Be sure to copy Jay on your email to Rich.

I got a reply this morning and the registration page is up and running now. See www.nnu.edu/wesley2008. Looks interesting to me!
So I registered and booked my flights, and I am really looking forward to being there. I read Scott Daniels will be there, and I would love to meet any other NazNetters.
I've even been offered a place to stay, for which I am very grateful. That really was like a sign that this was the right thing to do. I've been praying about this and this morning, opening my email, I found both an email with the registration page that I'd been looking for all this time, and an offer for a place to stay. Can't get much clearer than that.

I'm going. :) Perhaps we can meet up, Hans! Our pastor and associate pastor are going. We are likely staying with our former pastor, or students we know, or...? We were planning to stay for only the Wesley conference...it had shown up as $65 and a separate fee for the Everything Must Change one, but the link you provided said they are together and couldn't be registered for separately. Odd! What did we register for, then? <scratching head> I just emailed that link to our pastor...hopefully we'll work things out, I really would like to go to both.
See you there!

I don't know, Meghan. Some people really like the guy, but others really don't. I'm not sure what the combined effect is and it does make the conference more expensive.
I am looking forward to it. Do you have his new book?
No, not yet. And I've been buying a lot of books lately so I'm going to do some reading in stead of buying :basic05

I've been looking at the 2008 Wesley Center Conference and thinking that it looked like a very interesting conference that I would like to go to. The main problem is that the cost is pretty much prohibitive by the time you factor in 3 nights in a hotel, food, travel costs, and conference fees. We're talking over 2 weeks salary for me.
So is there anyone who is planning on going that might want to split a hotel room to save cost? I'm not sure I could even go at this point, but I'm trying to see if I could find a way and reducing the housing cost is the first step.

Kevin, I won't be staying in a hotel room, otherwise I'd love to! But my son Edwin has often stayed with people from this website http://www.couchsurfing.com/ and his experiences have been very positive so far. You might want to give it a try, he said there are a some people who offer a free place to sleep in Nampa.

Hans, so how are you going to get from where you're staying to the conference? Are you renting a car or maybe borrowing one? That'll be another issue is if I can get transportation from wherever I'm staying to the conference. Oh the logistical nightmares.
Anyone know any Nazarenes in the area that might wanna loan a couch or spare bed to a Nazarene pastor from Wisconsin? :basic05
I mean really... Hans Deventer, Scott Daniels. The only thing that could make the conference better is if Roland came. I have to find a way to get there.

You could contact some of the churches there. Especially College Church and First Church. Check Nazarene.org for their contact info. If my dad were healthier I'd offer his couch. He used to go to Nazarene churches in Marshfield and Madison, so I'm sure you'd have a lot to talk about. :)

I did, Hans! I am going to be making a road trip out of it, driving up through OKC, Denver, and Salt Lake City. It's a part of the country I've never seen before, so I will be taking my time.

I'd better not commit to Friday lunch. I'm supposed to deliver the opening conference address at 1pm, and I've committed to helping get things set up. I'm open for a breakfast, but that's probably not ideal for the rest of you.
There is a much-frequented Mexican food spot called "Chapala's" a few miles from campus. I recommend it. There are a host of fast-food spots in the area too. Good Chinese food is two miles toward downtown Nampa.
I hope that helps...

For the budget conscious:
Super 8 Nampa is about 4 miles from NNU.
624 Nampa Blvd
Nampa, ID 83687

Don't know how nice it is, but they have breakfast and high speed internet, and if you are tax exempt the rate is 59.00 per night. Works for me!

Also for the budget conscious: (no cost involved)
My home is available for another couple or three, preferably men; I have no hostess available, but we men could "batch" OK. I live four blocks from NNU's Brandt Center in a comfortable older home, don't do much cooking but kitchen facilities are available as needed. Check Naznet's membership list for personal info if you wish, also email address. Also, I can arrange to meet your plane in Boise, if needed, and get you to Nampa.

We have a reservation at Chapalas for noon on Feb. 8 for about 10-12. Let me know at franklinmj@juno.com if there are any changes.
Hans nothing has arrived here directly or by member private mail. I did send a private note to Bob suggesting that if It would be of help that I could pick you up but have received no return message from him There was one note a few days back about Bob being your host and that he would be picking you up. I just offered the possibility of me picking you up if that would be more convenient for Bob since I live about 6 miles from the Boise Airport and he is about 18 miles from the airport. I am still open to help in anyway I can. I hope Bob can be included in our lunch a Chapalas and Meghan has at least a couple of pastors she will be traveling with that would be welcomed.
Previously, we had a count of 6. Debi is certainly welcomed so with Bob that will be 8 so there is room for Meghan's pastors if they would join us. I am sure Meghan will appreciate the addition of Debi. I do not know whether Hal Kreps is available and could join us or if he is off traveling or in warmer climes. Lurkers let me know if you wish to come out of your dens and join us so I can notify Chapalas of the additions.

Tom, as I look at the program, I see for Friday:
8-9am - Continental breakfast & devotional in the NNU Brandt Center lobby
and for Saturday:
7:29-8:19 am - Conversations over Coffee…first come first serve sign-up on-site:
My guess (but not more than that) would be that Saturday would be best suited for a breakfast somewhere else. You know the place, so I'll follow whatever you suggest (hey, this is no theology discussion so I'm very easy going :laughing)

For those who can attend the breakfast too, let's meet at the NNU cafeteria (affectionately called "the dex" by students). And let's go with Hans's suggestion of meeting on Saturday, I think that 7am should work. This won't be too early. And meeting in the dex is convenient and will guarantee lots of table room for whomever wants to join us.

For those of you who are traveling to Nampa, Mike's discussion about active pilots (http://www.naznet.com/community/showthread.php?p=166064#post166064) reminded me to suggest that while you are there, try to get to the Nampa airport and visit the Mission Aviation Fellowship Headquarters. (http://www.maf.org/home) They have a small museum and gift shop, and you might get them to give you a tour of their hangar facilities.
The museum has the slightly reconstructed remains of Nate Saint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nate_Saint)'s Piper PA-14 that was recovered from the Curaray River in Equador.
My dad flies his glider (http://soaridaho.com/Schreder/index.html) out of the Nampa Airport. Here are a couple pictures I took of the plane when he took me to visit the MAF headquarers a couple years ago.

I'm posting this to confirm those who will be attending the NazNetter luncheon at Chapala's in Nampa at noon this coming Friday, Feb. 8 in conjunction with the conference at NNU because I wish to call Chapala's on Tuesday to confirm our reservation. To the best of my understanding, the following have confirmed that they plan to be present, Hans, Kevin, David, Scott, Meghan, Debi, Ron Hunter, Bob Manley, myself and I have invited but not received confirmation from Hal Kreps which would make 10. I'll be there!
This has been a bummer of a week. I had planned on making a big road trip out of this event, and spend some much needed alone time on the open road. I was going to leave today or tomorrow, and then take my time coming home when the conference was over. It was to be a week's vacation.
Well, some changes with our staffing here at DCN have resulted in me really, really needing to be at church next Sunday. Had to change all of my arrangements at the last minute.
Anyway, I am still VERY excited about the conference, and can't wait to meet everyone!

That I will be at the morning session on Saturday! I spoke with Delta and if I miss my flight on purpose on Saturday morning, I can pay a $50 fee and get on the 3:10 flight for the afternoon.
The problem is when I had to change travel plans at the last minute, I booked through priceline.com (never done it before) not realizing they just arbitrarily assigned you a departing time. Got a great deal, but then I was stuck.
So, we'll see what happens, but I'm feeling much better about it now!

He has a doctor's appointment in Boise Friday, and there is no way I'm going to let him drive after being on that schedule all week and working all night the night before. If you've ever driven between Mountain Home and Boise before, you know it's one of those stretches of highway that is not known for its interesting scenery! I'm in Nampa! Last night, I attended Ash Wednesday services at Epworth Chapel (http://www.epworthchapelonthegreen.org/) and enjoyed a great cup of coffee afterwards at Moxie Java (love trying new coffee places, and I was not disappointed) with Dr. Brook Thelander, parish rector. He also teaches online classes for the NNU graduate degree program.
Looking forward to seeing everyone today! On the plane up here, I sat next to a fella that was on his way to Montana for some drunken revelry and skiing with his poker buddies. I told him I was meeting some friends as well. He told me not to party too hard. So, let's not get into too much trouble, y'all.:q)

Ha ha!
Well, I'm sitting here waiting for my pastor to show up. Apparently there's "extreme weather conditions" so we might have to turn back, but we're going to give it a shot. I said, "Hey, I'm from Canada, throw some chains in the back and let's go!"
Oh, and David, maybe add to your siggy a first thing: "What God did for us." That's what matters when we die! Neat you went to an Ash Wed service, looks like a great parish "Wesleyan-Anglican"...I went with my friend to her church last night. It was a bilingual service...my first! I thought the priest did a good job switching back and forth and still helping us feel like we understood everything. Helps to have side-by-side readings...last night's OT reading from Joel really spoke to me, "Render your hearts, not your clothes." So many times we look at the OT as legalistic rules, but God's concern has always been with our hearts...
Hope to see you all soon!

First time I have heard that scripture Meghan. I saw a picture of you, that is much prettier than the one you usually have for an avatar. Some may have to render their clothes, also, because it is so hard to stop buying them, when shopping is so much fun.
