First, the necessary disclaimers:
*I am not a professional movie reviewer.
*I am not an amateur movie reviewer.
*Sometimes, I like a movie just because it makes me feel good. After all, I go to movies to be entertained.
August Rush is the story of an orphan who hears music in the sounds of life. His parents, who spent one night together, are a classical cellist and a member of a rock band, do not know he exists. He believes that the music he hears comes from his parents. How they get together is the story of the film.
I liked August Rush. The end is very predictable, and the necessary suspension of disbelief must go further than I wish was necessary. But I found myself caring about the characters, shedding tears several times, and wanting to watch it again. And I will buy the sound track, which should be nominated for an Oscar.

I finally made it to see "August Rush" last evening. Three young friends had independently told me I ought to see it, that I would like it. I was anxious to see how well they know my taste in movies. I did indeed enjoy it, but I certainly see why you start off with disclaimers in your review. There were some 'mistakes' that were obvious even to me as someone who judges movies more by the appeal of the story and dialog and sensitivity for my sensitivities than by their cinematic excellence.
Still, I loved the way the final rhapsody incorporated the ambient sounds of the city. That was some excellent music! My friends were right.

I also enjoyed this movie
The fact that extreme bummers in life did not dampen the spirits
nor harden the heart of this boy, nor did it deter him from following his dream.
no more need be said esle I spoil the story for those of you who
will enjoy it

My wife and I rented it tonight.
Good choice. GREAT choice. The way tension was used and relieved throughout the movie left me quite drained afterwards.
And I loved the music!

I just got done watching this movie a couple of hours ago. I enjoyed the music (all aspects of it) in the movie tremendously. The story line was a bit predictable, but the characters were believable and to me well acted. I really enjoyed the character who played August/Evan and I always enjoy hearing Irish accents in a movie.

OK, so you guys have told us how great the music is {so I might just like the movie, therefore} ... unless, of course, the tension/resolution balance of which you speak is of a rather dramatic/crime-related/whatever sort rather than of the "light" variety.
Could you tell us re a bit of the story-line, so we'll have some idea of what the movie is about? Don't recall seeing any such movie ads/previews for anything called, "August Rush."
Thanks.

Gina, trust me, you'll like the movie. The plot is similar to that of "Oliver" and has approximately the same level of tension. August Rush is the name of the orphan and he is a musical genius. Robin Williams is in the role of the Fagin character. I like him much better as a good guy, but I guess somebody has to be the bad guy. August Rush writes a rhapsody that reflects the "music" of the city.
I own two soundtracks for movies and didn't buy either. Obviously, I don't collect them. But I think the soundtrack for this one will end up on my Amazon wishlist.

Thanks much, Marsha! From reading re "tension," I'd not know if it was CSI-style or what you just told me .
Musical genius, eh? Robin Williams ... bad or good guy, might like it, since he seems OK ... tho' [I]Patch Adams is one of my faves re Robin Wms.
Again, thanks!

I feel comfortable recommending this movie.
Here's a movie review site I always used when my kids lived at home. It gets pretty detailed about those things that tend to offend me. http://www.kids-in-mind.com/a/augustrush.htm

I have always found the site helpful.
As I mentioned, when my kids were younger it was my go-to site for any movie they wanted to see. It got so routine that they'd bring me the review before asking me or decide not to bother asking after looking at it. :)

Ryan & I may be behind the times, but we just watched this movie tonight and rented it from our local Redbox. I love music, so the soundtrack was definitely one of the more enjoyable parts of this movie. I also found it difficult to dislike Robin Williams, since usually his characters are so loveable. I too thought the ending required a bit too much "reality suspension," although I suppose it's better than creating awkward dialogue after the audience can already infer the resolution of the story. All in all, a great movie. I actually sent an e-mail to my mother recommending the movie to her (that's how you know it's a winner).

What? Ryan and Katelynn agreed on a movie?
Perhaps I was mistaken, but somewhere I got the impression that this didn't happen often.

We do like some of the same movies; honestly we agree more than not, I think. Don't let her post fool you - she was much more critical while we were watching.

My wife and I liked this movie too. Our daughter and son-in-law recommended it to us because they were sure we would like it. They were right!

My family watched it on DVD last night. As usual we rate movies by the number of clips we might be able to use to illustrate a point in church. This one has a great one. Robin Williams says to the little boy, "what do you want in all the world?" And he replies "found." That is the reality of humanity.
Of course the ending was exactly what you thought it would be through the whole movie but I must say they missed a great opportunity to make it a real heart string tugger by simply stopping too early. There should have been an embrace and a memorable line at the end which would have been really easy to do with all the great set ups that were coming together toward the end. Instead it let you kind of put all of that together in your own head. Some people love that stuff, I would have preferred to actually see it.
