View Full Version : Coach with class...West Virginia could learn from this

June Jones claims to not concern himself with the BCS process. With his Hawaii Warriors on the cusp of making into one of the big-time bowl games, you tend not to believe him.
But his actions back him up. Facing a first-and-goal at the Boise State 1-yard line, he had his quarterback Colt Brennan kill off the rest of the clock by taking a knee.
Already leading the Broncos 39-27, more points weren’t needed to improve to 11-0 and claim the Western Athletic Conference championship. However, when breaking into the 40s and posting a 19-point victory over a ranked team could possibly translate into some valuable style points, Jones wasn’t interested.
“It was better that way,” Brennan said. “Taking a knee at the one showed what kind of character this team has.”
Showing any disrespect to Boise State, which had won the previous five WAC titles, wasn’t worth trading in for something to possibly impress pollsters.
“I’m not into stats,” Jones said. “I’m not into all that stuff.”
Nice to see coaches like that who teach their kids character and class.

Tressel had his quarterback take a knee at the end of the Michigan game as well when the Buckeyes could have scored.
Woody, in one game, was beating Michigan by a bunch and went for a two point conversion near the end. When asked why, he replied, "because we couldn't go for three!"
I believe the next year OSU got beat in Bo's first battle with Woody.

What is WVU and Rich Rodriquez supposed to learn from this? Pull all of your players off the field and go home at the end of the 3rd quarter? That seems to have been the only option left.

Yes Greg, you are right about Tressel. He did this in another game this year as well...although I can't remember which one right now. Tressel is a class act.

If Mizzou isn't there, I'll probably root for Ohio State, just because I think the Big Least is a joke conference.

Well, my mom was from West Virginee, so that's my other state. I wouldn't mind Mizzou winning, though.

FWIW, I do think WV is a legit team, but I think they're the only one in the Big Least.

Hey, Steve....good to see you...or see your posts, I guess. How are you guys doing? I sure do miss the sports talks in the book store and the break room.
I would never argue with you that in hoops the Big East is, in fact, BIG.
But not on the gridiron...not since they lost all but one of their legit football teams to the ACC. I suppose you can hope for the continued improvement of UConn, or a revival at Syracuse and/or Pitt. But for now, football isn't the conference strong suit.

Yeah as a Louisville fan it has been a horrible year....
We are doing good. I also miss our talks...and trips to Chineese. Good times

I like June Jones. I have his football card when he was 3rd string QB for the Falcons long ago.... Glad to hear he's doing well.
