Santa arrived early at our home. My Nikon D300 arrived this morning!!! I decided to go ahead and open it because I will be taking pictures of children at the church Christmas Party on Saturday.
At this point, I am just getting familiar, but I can already tell that I am going to like it.

Congratulations, Dave! Looks like a wonderful camera to me, but the price for it here (€ 1750 for the body alone) is way out of my league.

There is still a waiting list in the U.S. so the price has not started coming down yet. I am what is referred to as an "early adopter" which means that I tend to pay more. I would expect that the price will drop a little early next year when the supply catches up with the demand.
Santa paid approximately $1,800 but got a photo printer thrown in for free.

Dave,
It's funny (ironic) to see you'll be getting the latest and greatest...
In the past few weeks I've found myself shooting more and more film.
I've exposed 10 rolls of 120 and about 40 sheets of 4 X 5" transparency film.
I've forgotten how much fun film was! Plus... there's no comparison between film and digital for the "look".
I did use my digital for test shots, but when I finished processing the transparencies... the quality and tonal depth was far better using film!

I am finding the D300 is very similar to the D200 (I guess I shouldn't be surprised) but has a few more "bells and whistles." I used it yesterday to take pictures of children with Santa. So far, so good.

Dave,
Did they improve the software? I'm not a big fan of Nikon software, I find it a pain to use.

I have not yet had the time to load the software. To tell the truth, I have not tried the Nikon software. I use Picasa II. I have Photoshop, but still have not taken the time to learn all of its features.
