and boy is the owner steamed. Our local sportscaster noted that Petrino had been an assistant coach some years back at the U of Idaho. Sounds kind of like a Dennis Erickson stunt.

Well, when your NFL team stinks...and when your quarterback is going to jail for 2 years...and when you find out you really DON'T LIKE the pro game...can you really blame the guy? He's just the first rat off a sinking ship.

Personally, with the money a top college coach can demand these days, I don't know why anyone would put up with the attitudes of many NFL players, and all the other associated headaches that go with the pro game. Joe Paterno has done it the right way. Lou Holtz tried the pro game, then came back to college and had great success. So did Dan Devine.

It's a different game in the NFL, and I think that for the most part, successful NFL coaches now come from the ranks of NFL coordinators and assistants, rather than from the college ranks.

I thought for sure he was going to Michigan when he announced his resignation. Arkansas isn't a bad job though.

It has gotten to be that the head football coach at a state's top university becomes a symbol of state pride. So who can pay for a the highest salary to a coach who will produce the most wins and the highest in state pride. Kind of like my dad can beat up your dad. I know that the Houston Nutts were certainly excited the afternoon before they flew from Boise to Little Rock for his interview down there.

This guy never intended to stay in ATL...he was just waiting for a better job in college. He will last maybe 3 years at Arkansas...maybe less is MIles leaves LSU.

Yes I am a Louisville fan, but this guy is not loyal to anyone but himself

I can blame him, because regardless of what other coaches do, that doesn't make it right for him to act the way he did. Sure the team stinks, but he just met with Arthur blank on the Monday before he resigned and re-assured him that he was his coach. They get beat up by the Saints and then he resignes, sneaks off and signs with Arkansas. That is sad, but then it gets worse.

How does he let his team, the team that he has been telling the whole year to believe in him and follow him, know that he has left them..........He leaves a letter. This is how he lets these guys know that he is not going to coach them anymore, with a letter! That is WEAK!

Thats his style...he left Louisville after signing a big 10 year deal and saying " I will retire here"....three weeks later he is a falcon

Scott, I wasn't saying I thought he handled this correctly. I was simply stating some of the reasons why he did what he did. To walk out and leave your players a "Dear John" letter is really pretty classless. I wonder how folks in Arkansas are feeling about this guy? Or do they care, as long as he wins football games?

About the same way the University of Idaho people felt when after Dennis Erickson told them he was back for the long haul and 9 months later went to Arizona State.
