Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a song going through your head? Some people refer to that as an "ear worm."
Anyway, I have awakened three nights in a row with the same song going through my head -- http://bobdylan.com/songs/quinn.html
The thing that started it was a children's record. I have been converting our children's records from the 1960's and 70's to digital. The Mighty Quinn was included on one of them from the 1970's mixed in with other children's songs. I recognized it as a Greatful Dead song. Both versions seem to be caught in my head.
I thought I would share it here to see how many others catch the ear worm. I would share the MP3 file, but doing so would be a copyright violation.

You wouldn't happen to have any Little Marcy albums in there would you? I've looked and looked for the song "Wake Up for Sunday School"... at least that's what I believe the name of it is.

Oh, NO! Denise!
Little Marcy singing, "Wake up, wake up, you sleepyhead, it's time for Sunday School?"
Oh my, the memory of that song! We used to have the album.
And any time I get up in the night there is always some chorus or song going through my head.

I remember Little Marcy, but I don't recall seeing any of the records recently. If I remember correctly, her songs were on tape rather than record. I have tubs of tapes to sort through before I die. Perhaps I will find a Little Marcy in one of them.

I'm certain I prefer "The Mighty Quinn". It was first recorded by Bob Dylan. I have the Manfred Mann version from 1968. The Greatful Dead did their version in 2000.
As near as I recall.

I suddenly get old hymns/choruses going through my mind, usually last a few days!

Many days, I will wake up with a hymn. My kids are so used to me singing around the house, they probably know as many of the old solo songs as I do. As I get older, I appreciate how the songwriter/author formed the thoughts in grand poetry that it is hard for me to express myself better. I sometimes pray songs. So, forgive me if I neglect to call them "ear worms" because I am far from attempting to lose them from my mind; instead, I am happy to etch them in my memory.
However, some recent non-religious songs that continue to float around in my head come from The Best of Nat King Cole: most especially "Stardust" and "Walking my baby back home" and several others.
And now the purple dust of twilight time
steals across the meadows of my heart.
High up in the sky the little stars climb
always reminding me that we're apart.
You wander down the lane and far away
leaving me a song that will not die.
Love is now the stardust of yesterday;
The music of the years gone by.
Sometime I wonder why I spend the lonely night
dreaming of a song;
the melody haunts my reverie
and I am once again with you.
When our love was new
and each kiss an inspiration.
But that was long ago
now my consolation is in the stardust of a song.
Beside the garden wall when stars are bright,
you are in my arms.
The nightingale tells his fairytale
of paradise where roses bloom.
Though I dream in vain,
in my heart it will remain my stardust melody;
the memory of love's refrain.
Sweet!

Ours was on vinyl. I LOVED waking up to that song every Sunday morning. I've tried finding it for years. By the time I locate it, I'll have to update it to what ever format will be necessary for my GRANDCHILDREN to listen to, because all of my kids will to be too old to want to hear it. :laughing

I woke up with an "ear worm" last week. A tune I'd never heard before. It's really weird though, because it was as if there was a song waiting to be written. What I found strangest about it though was that it ended with Brad Mercer's "Because God is still God and love is still enough". I feel as if I have the idea for the entire song, but I lack most of the words. It's something I'd LOVE to work on sometime... if ONLY I were musically inclined. lol

At Christmas Feliz Navidad, which I don´t really mind (loving Spanish), becomes one of those frequently.
However, the worst one, it seems, that has stuck around for days at a time (way too long for just one song! :rolleyes:), was this (careful, so it doesn´t attack you, too! :basic05) .........
Anybody here wanna live forever?
Say, Í do,
et cetera .......
:p
OK, back to bed for awhile now. This was a too'long pitstop. gs

Hmm. I think I'm going to call my son's answering machine, quickly sing a few words of "Arky, Arky", "Father Abraham", and "Feliz Navidad", and hang up. Merry Christmas, Paul. Hee hee hee.

Denise, here's a not too complimentary website discussing Little Marcy. It does have a very good list of her LPs and is rather informative:
http://www.hipwax.com/music/oddpop/freak_lm.html
A search on amazon.com reveals some of the LPs.
A search on Youtube locates several clips of Little Marcy eg Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam. http://youtube.com/watch?v=kmUbyHt5bLc
The folowing site has great links to little marcy songs and even a marcy myspace page:
