Is it possible to enable using custom avtars in the user settings, for registered users? I have a little gif file I'd like to use, if at all possible... Nothing serious if for some reason this aint possible

Thanks guys. Strange to see the board looking so different

Hi,

You can upload a profile picture that will show when people look at your profile, or the member list. It looks like the avatars them selves are just the ones that are listed. The moderators probably have the ability to upload pictures for the avatars, then anyone can use it. Not sure if this helps.

Laters,
Gregory L. Edwards

P.S. Thanks moderators for fixing my registration goof up. It pays to read the FAQ.

I am sure there is a way to add Custom Avatar, but I am going to wait until Scott is available. I don't want to foul things up.

PS: I sure like this spell check feature.

Hi,

Ok, I guess I am dense. Which icon on the editor is for spell checking? I have tried different ones with no results. I personally like the spell checker on the Google toolbar, it works really well, most of the time.

The Spell Checker is in the upper right hand corner of the frame. It is a check mark with ABC above it.

I'm sure there is a way to let users upload Avitars, but I can't find it right now. I am sitting in a hotel lobby using my laptop -- if Dave or Hans hasn't figured it out by the time I get home I will spend more time looking into it. Please remind me in a week or so!

Hi,

I checked out a demo for vBulletin, and I could only see where you can upload avatars in the Admin Control Panel, but there is no option to allow users to upload. Only profile pics can be uploaded by the user. Probably to save disc space.

I didn't remember exactly how it worked. I would be glad to upload custom Avators for people if it didn't get to be too big a hastle.

Thanks for checking it out.

When you go to http://www.naznet.com/community/profile.php?do=editavatar (through quick links, edit profile, choose edit avatar in the left control panel) you can upload one or select one of the already available.

Could it be that as you are a moderator, that you can add custom avtars and regular users can't???

Yes, I tried to add one this morning, and it said that I could not do so.

Maybe this because the forum is in a test mode at present, and we won't be able to add our own until the ones in charge decide that this will be a regular board.

I think I have made the changes necessary to allow custom avatars. I just added one to see if it worked. I was not signed in as moderator, so it should work for you too.

Is it possible that the one you attempted to upload was larger than 80 X 80 pixels. That is the maximum size for an avatar.

I tried and tried to find a box to upload....no where to be found, Hans. I think just moderators can add aviaters. I clicked on Bullwinkle instead for now until you are able to allow others to use this feature. I do know that on the other boards that use this software you can add you're own aviater by uploading.

Click on "User CP" on the tool bar.

Click on "Edit Avatar"

It should show you the standard Avatars and also give you the option to upload a custom Avatar.

The maximum size for the Avatar is 80 X 80 pixels.

Nope! I went back and looked again. There is no place to upload a custom avatar. I'm going to go check another forum that I frequent. Maybe there is a setting that needs to be changed so that others besides moderators can upload custom avatars. BRB

Dave,

When I'm logged in as myself, Brad Mercer, I see all the pre-designed avatars, but I don't see anything that lets me upload my own custom avatar, even when I scroll through all 5 pages of avatars. Where on the screen should it be, and what exactly does it say?

Oops! It's not the same software, but it is very similar. I didn't see a place there to upload a custom avatar, either, although it looked like it might be a possibility. I just didn't see a button to do it. Guess we'll have to wait for Scott to get back and play with it, huh?

Mine shows "custom Avatar" in a box below the preloaded Avatars. If it does not show on yours, that means that I must not have found the right switch to turn it on for those who are not moderators. I will look again.

This is the text from the block:

Custom AvatarIf you have a custom avatar and want to keep it as it is, leave the fields below as they are.
Use Custom Avatar
You may upload a new custom image using the controls below. Either enter the URL to the image you wish to use, or use the upload control to upload an image directly from your own computer.
Enter Avatar URL:

Upload an Avatar From Your Computer:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Sorry to have missed getting to Frisco yesterday. We just goofed on the amount of time we needed to get over there. I was disappointed. I've been wanting to visit NewStart for quite a while. But, we had a great time anyway! We'll catch you next time.

Apparently, I have not found the switch that will allow everyone to post a custom avatar. There are two "work around":

1. Those who want to have a custom avatar can wait until Scott Cundiff has time to turn on the custom avatar feature.

2. Anyone who doesn't want to wait can email their desired avatar to me. I will add it to the Avatar data base. Then they can select it as one of the standard avatars.

Brad, I just noticed your post. I'm half asleep today!

We've got it figured out where you are now, so we'll make it a point next time we come down that way. Mark was actually going to check mapquest from the hotel, but they charged $10/hr for internet usage in their business center. We didn't take our laptops. Besides, I think that was $10/day for internet! He tried to find a map of the area but couldn't find a good one and the only one we had didn't show Frisco. I was really surprised we didn't have a Texas map in the car. We used to.

This was sort of a last minute trip right down to the point of throwing things in the suitcases after we had already planned to be on the road, so it was a bit disorganized! We do plan on taking some more time off, so I'm quite sure we'll end up back down that way sooner or later and we'll catch you then.

Frisco is north on Highway 121 from I-35E. We're about 45 minutes northeast from DFW airport.

Ugh! If we had gone that way, we would have made it! We stayed at the Marriott on the south side of DFW. Mark said he would stay on 121 if he knew it would go through. When we left, we only had about 45 minutes. We decided to follow the directions from Denton that you had sent us since we didn't have a map. Long way around! Oh, well. That's what happens when you don't check things out ahead of time. :(

Betty, that Texas Visitors' Center (just after you cross the river into TX) has wonderful maps of Dallas and Fort Worth areas. Their state maps are excellent and they will give you (gratis) as many of them as you desire. I found them to be accurate in getting around everywhere. Too bad they don't include MapsCos in the deal but those have to be purchased. It is almost mandatory for people living in the area to have MapsCos in their automobiles. With a MapsCo, gasoline in the car, and a Toll Tag, one can be very fearless in Dallas.

We were aware of the free maps and have gotten them there before which is one reason I thought there was one in the car! Unfortunately, by the time we crossed the state line (we got away much, much later than intended on Friday), the Visitors' Center was closed for the day. We were going to pick one up on our way home to have for future visits to the Lone Star State, but we messed around too long and it was once again closed when we got there. Mark said he would write for a map.

We actually stopped at a QT yesterday morning when it was getting so late to look at a map and see how much farther we had to go. We also needed gas, so while Mark was pumping gas, I was inside checking the maps. That's when we realized that we had too far yet to go and by that time, the service was already well under way. We just shoulda checked it out before leaving home! I was so busy that I left it up to Mark, who is usually on top of such things. He's been pretty busy, too, so we both slipped up. We know where we're going for next time, though!

Betty

P.S. I would challenge your statement about being fearless in Dallas! I don't think I will ever be "fearless" when driving there. I much prefer to leave that up to Mark. I'll do the navigating, thank you. Just make sure I have a map! :)

Brad, just below all the pages of the stock avatars, there is a place to upload your custom one. You can do it from your computer or from a URL. It was easy to do. Hope it is showing on your screen.

Ah, my dear, you missed one very important distinction: It is the resident living there who can become quite fearless while driving in the metro with the things I mentioned. Dallas traffic can be rather unsettling to infrequent visitors - especially with all the constant road construction that goes on there. I became very use to it while living there for ten years and just almost get tickled when people here talk about OKC "rush hour" traffic.

just tried it tonight; let's see if it works! if it doesn't, it was snoopy dancing on "my" piano, playing his [maybe "my"?] guitar. ;o)

WHAT's going on? when I went back to read, saw the original message, and not the edited addition ... hmmm. 'wonder if this will show up with it, too, finally ... or if I won't see either edit. gs

LAST edit: NOW, I wonder if I can turn snoopy around, so he can face the message, rather than the outside edge ... would look better. ;o) gs

Re: Driving fearlessly in Dallas, I commuted from the northern suburbs to downtown Dallas every weekday for 16 years. I got very, very, very used to it.

When I was in Indianapolis for General Assembly in 2001 a local radio station there was talking about possible freeway expansion. In defending the need for it, a caller complained that sometimes the morning rush hour in Indianapolis got so bad that he actually had to slow down! On the freeway!

It was hysterical.

Actually, I'll take Los Angeles any day over Dallas! Of course, I used to live there, so I got used to it. But, it never really bothered me. OK, so I was young then! LOL It really isn't the traffic that bothers me, though. I have found that there is often not adequate signage to warn of upcoming exits, etc. I have missed exits more than once because I was in the wrong lane and by the time I saw the sign for my exit, there wasn't enough time to get over.

I also hate those very high interchanges. I think that stems to some extent, at least, from having a blow-out just after coming down off of one! Whatever the reason, I just don't like them. I really had a tough time with the bridge over the Mississippi up by Charleston, too. The first time we went over it, I about died! We started up on the bridge and I realized how high it was and there was no turning back. I did get somewhat used to it, but not totally. I don't think it's the height as much as it is that they are so narrow... both the bridge and the interchanges. If something happens up there, there is NO place to go!

Yep, I'll still take L.A. over Dallas!

You are so funny! I drove okay in L.A. for three weeks one time and have driven a bunch in D.C and surrounding areas. LA does have better signage. Those high interchanges don't bother me after they are completed but I will do everything to avoid going near one during construction. U.S. 75 (North Central Expressway) and LBJ was the one I avoided for so long. Heebie jeebies while being built..... Preston or the Tollway became my roads of choice for north-south traveling.

We were late to my son's high school graduation at Texas Stadium because of typical wrecks and other delays on LBJ - really stuck in traffic. At least 1/3 of the huge class was late and we left Plano more than 3 hours before the ceremony was to begin. So much for allowing enough delay time.....:(

When living in Dallas, having a cell phone is almost mandatory so one can inform others that he is stuck in traffic somewhere enroute or for obtaining correct directions, meeting places, etc. After moving to OKC, I rarely used my cell phone in town and only used it when traveling, especially in Dallas.

Such is big-city living,

When attempting to load a custom avatar, one must click on the "custom avatar" button before trying to download the image, then browse and download a pic that is small enough AND NOT animated.

Seems so simple now.
