I hear about the Jets all the time. What's worse, I watch a video blog daily and the guy is a hardcore Jets fan. It makes me sick.

Anyways, I'm curious about what people here on NazNet think about the Jets this upcoming season. Are they worth the hype? Will they even be a playoff team?

I can run down a full discussion of what I think, but I'd rather get some opinions first from others.

worth the hype- I don't think so. Deserving of the number 1 rating, probably not. BUT, I do think they have the ability to be legitimate contenders.

for a playoff spot? I agree 10,000%. For a Super Bowl ring? Not so sure. Then again, ANY playoff team is a Super Bowl contender, so I take your point.

I was impressed by the Jets and Mark Sanchez's leadership. And I think they are actually a strong team and will show some serious poise in the playoffs. We'll see. Are you asking for more analysis of Mark Sanchez? Shea would probably like to debate that, because I don't think we have yet.

I think Shea and I are united in our opinion that your first sentence is baloney.

They will be a contender for the division. whether that makes it a strong Jets team or a weak division, I'm not sure yet. Any division- or wildcard- winner is a Super Bowl contender, so you might say they'll be contenders to be contenders.

Did we watch the same preseason game? First off, Sanchez' rookie season was mediocre at best. He did not come close to living up to the hype surrounding him, and I believe I demonstrated before that among current NFL starters, his first season as a starter was in the bottom 5 in nearly all relevant statistical areas. Compared to the last couple rookie classes, and to those starting QBs in the league who were the starter their rookie years, he faired even worse- bottom 2 or 3 in nearly every area, going toe-to-toe with Matt Stafford for the worst in multiple categories. The difference is, Stafford was QBing a team that had 0 wins the season before he came, while Sanchez was on a squad that went 9-7 the previous year- which, incidentally, is exactly the record they had with him last year. So from where I'm sitting, his rookie season was a wash. He has great potential, but has not yet shown that he can can be anything more than a mediocre QB. As for being a leader... the dude's a sophomore. Something tells me there are other guys who are the leaders on that team.

Last night, Sanchez put up decent numbers, but the Jets didn't do anything that would lead me to crown them favorites in the AFC East, nevermind the conference or the league.

I was gonna say Hogwash, but I think Baloney is a byproduct made from washing Hogs, so I guess we're close enough.

Okay, here is the deal with Sanchez. Regardless of what we think the Jets have annointed Sanchez. They believe in his leadership. Here is a quote lifted from Jet's coaches discussing Sanchez and his leadership.

“He came in and did what we expected him to do,” coach Rex Ryan said. “He’s looked outstanding all through training camp, and tonight was no different.”

Sanchez has endeared himself to his teammates by acting more like a 10-year veteran than a second-year player. He sets the tone on the practice field and in the locker room with his competitive nature.

“I don’t care if you’re playing that sucker in dominoes or hopscotch or whatever, he wants to win,” Richardson said. “He’s never lost. I mean, everywhere he’s been, he’s been a winner.”

So there you have it fellas! Baloney right from the hog's mouth!

So what you're saying is, the Jets support their starting Quarterback, therefore he must be good?
You should look into what Rex Ryan says about the rest of his players, and what they say about each other. I will make no judgments as to whether it's a negative or a positive, but the Jets are an incredibly cocky bunch. In speaking of his players, Ryan grades them on the low end as "great" and on the high end as "the best in the league." He doesn't even know all of their names, but he's made it very clear that he believes every player on his team is elite, top of the line, grade A, from the special reserve at the Super Bowl winners factory. As for players talking about each other, this is training camp, AND the Jets are on "hard knocks" this year. If they don't speak positively about each other, it sets a bad tone in the locker room.
Going to the Jets for an opinion on the Jets is just silly.

If Revis signs a contract he's happy with, then I believe they'll have the best defense in football. If the running game looks the way it did last year despite the new faces, then I think they'll score enough to win.

The NFL always comes down to who shows up on a given day and executes a superior game plan. I think the Jets have everything they need to win a Superbowl, but they'll need to answer a few questions on the field.

I think this is the biggest struggle I have with all of the hype. They lost their best runner last year. They lost Leon Washington. They only have 1 of the 3-headed monster that they sported last year and it isn't their best one. Shonn Greene only went over 100 yards rushing in one match - against Oakland.

They replaced the other two backs with LaDanian Tomlinson who is anything except a proven capable back at this point in his career. He's certainly not what Thomas Jones was last year.

Add to that the fact that Alan Faneca is gone and replacing him is a rookie. This might be good down the road but you better bet this is going to hurt their running this year and heaven forbid he struggles in the passing game because Sanchez will need all the protection he can get.

They relied heavily on Thomas Jones inside the 20 last year. While Santonio Holmes will be an addition, he might be suspended for a little while and he has never proven to be an explosive threat during the regular season and that's with a much better quarterback throwing him the ball.

I guess I just don't see what all the hype is about. The defense was great and will still be very good. However, they lost Kerry Rhodes, which I think will hurt them a lot more than they think in the talent category. Without Revis, I don't think Cromarte can handle the #1 CB spot. That secondary is troubling, especially when you take into account that Manning, Brees, and Brady (after facing them once) all had their way with the Jets defense.

I could go on and on... but that's what I've got for now.

You're right, Ben. I think Green is capable of being a #1 back, and the team seems to think so as well. The real hinge is Revis and everyone knows it. If he's not there, they finish third in the division. I did hear the conspiracy that the Revis contract signing will coincide with the finale of HBO's Hard Knocks. We'll see.

Here in Boise we'll be watching Kyle Wilson who came Picskataway, NJ to play for our Boise State Broncos and was a first round draft choice.
