This is part 1 of a trilogy and not surprisingly, some of the audience were not aware of this fact based on the reaction when the movie ended without resolving the story.

In case you haven't seen the thread about this movie elsewhere on NazNet, the book on which it is based was written by an atheist who resented the Christian agenda in Narnia and decided to write a fantasy trilogy with a distinctly anti-Christian agenda.

It was a bit ironic that one of the pre-movie trailers was for 'Prince Caspian' - the second installment in the Narnia trilogy. :)

I watch movies with my eyes open, so it was hard to miss allusions to the Roman Catholic Church in the storyline (a.k.a. The Magisterium). The Church is definitely the bad guy; doing sinister things to protect the institution and even kidnapping children in order to perform horrible experiements on them with the intent of freeing them from their connection to dust (original sin).

There are also allusions to the Church's history of persecuting and murdering those who practice Pagan religions.

I really hope that Christians can calm down from the hysteria about this movie. I found the movie interesting, but I see it as just another 'me-too' entry in the epic fantasy genre. The movie really doesn't have the goods as far as storytelling and character development. If the remaining chapters actually get produced, I'll probably go see them, but this movie is not even in the same class as 'The Lord of the Rings'.

I just noticed that there is another 'Golden Compass' thread here.

I ask that this review not be absorbed into that thread because:

a. I have actually seen the movie

b. I have posted a bona fide review of the movie and not just a commentary about whether the movie succeeds in killing God.

You're right. In order to avoid confusion, I moved the other thread to the Current Events Forum.

Well, I generally review movies that are off the beaten path for rank-and-file Nazarenes, so I didn't think to check whether a review already existed.
