I posted this on the general discussion, but I thought you theology discussion devotees would be especially interested in the upcoming NNU Wesley Center conference...

"Furtherness: Holiness Reoriented in a Changing World"

Keynote speakers include Brian McLaren, Scott Daniels, Alan Nelson, and myself. The conference is February 7-9 on the campus of Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Registration is now open and further information can be found at the conference website...

Among the confirmed attendees is Naznet's very own Hans Deventer!

Yea…holiness should go beyond just personal piety and change the world for the sake of others and make an impact on social and justice issues. In November I was invited to Sojourners monthly chapel services here in DC and Brian spoke to us a lot about this and his new book. Idaho is too far for me to attend but I look forward to hearing about it afterwards so let us know how it goes.

Peace,

James

James,

Thanks for the post! I'll be sure to make a few comments after the event, and I hope Hans and others will also. Maybe I'll even post a few conference photos...

Tom, Please do. There once was a time, in my former life, when I might be able to squeeze a conference trip into my departmental budget (as long as my supervisors didn't read the fine print). But those days are long gone.

So, love to hear about it. Is it possible they will be podcasting conference sessions?

I hope so! I know there are DVD's available from the 2007 conference.

Hans and Mike,

We will be simulcasting the conference on the internet. One of my colleauges, Mike Kipp, is in charge of this. We did it last year, and the DVDs were recorded during the simulcast. I'll try to let Naznet people know about the simulcast opportunity, although I think there is a small fee.

Jay,

Any way we might get it as a podcast? I'd love to post a link on emergentnazarenes.com

Ah, Tom, you tempt me. If I were to do something wild and crazy in February, I can't imagine anything more tempting than that conference. (Un)fortunately, I just registered for a university class that will take all of my Fridays this spring and save me from doing something so crazy as to fly to Nampa for a weekend of listening to people discuss theology.

A few years ago, I sent my daughter to the WTS conference in Seattle so that I could enjoy it vicariously without actually checking out of life for the event. Now, her schedule is even less flexible than mine.

At least I had M7 in February '07.

Marsha,

I'm sorry you can't come, but it sounds like you've got some exciting things going on.

By the way, who is your daughter? I was at that Seattle WTS (and every WTS meeting for years and years).

As of yet, I have not learned to enjoy McLaren's writings. I will try some more, before I make my final decision about him.

Anne and Dwayne,

I appreciate your openness to being persuaded. McLaren's approach and thought are not for everyone. But many people I know have been positively challenged and changed by his ministry.

Her name is Marissa. She was an ONU student at the time. I saw the announcement in the weekly Nazarene News and forwarded it to her. She rounded up three other ONU students to join her in cutting classes to fly halfway across the country for it. They had a wonderful time but I don't know how much they interacted with people. I know she chatted with Dennis Bratcher briefly. When she moved to Denver her journals from WTS kept coming here. I didn't mind a bit. I considered joining myself but couldn't find the category for 'hobbyist' on the membership form.

Marsha,

Thanks for the clarification on Marissa. I can't say that I remember meeting her in Seattle at WTS.

I encourage you to join WTS. Just google Wesleyan Theological Society, and you'll find the society website with lots of helpful info.

Friends,

Some weeks ago, I promised to post information on this thread about NNU's upcoming Wesley Center conference with Brian McLaren, Scott Daniels, and others this February 7-9. Here is the registration link:

https://www.nnu.edu/wesleywebcast/

You will see on the site that registration costs are reduced if people register together. This is our way of encouraging community and conversation. Of course, we also want those who must register individually to have access to the webcast, and this possibility is available.

I encourage you to register soon!

Tom
