My wife and I returned home last night after a 2 week vacation that included an 8-day cruise from LA to what is called the "Mexican Riviera." Ports of call included Acapulco, where we saw the cliff divers, and Cabo, where we went whale sighting.
We were on a small 2-engine 15-person chase boat. We went off shore about 6 to 8 miles. We would spot a spouting and race to the area. Our guide was good. After seeing a whale surface, we would idle along side. It usually would surface 3 or 4 times before changing course. We saw about ten whales; a couple of humpbacks within 30 feet.
I took dozens of pictures, using a very inexpensive digital. The boat was rocking, and the whale's surfacing was unpredictable. Most of my pictures were very poor. About ten were worth keeping. One picture, however, was outstanding. I got lucky. It is the picture below.
The experience was very invigorating, educational and adventurous.
