OK, when you mentioned it earlier, I'd tho't they were starting there this week, not next, so I looked and they weren't here. Then just the last couple of days I see they're advertised as, "Coming in January." [well, when? tell us!]
Anyway, since yours are starting tomorrow, after all, perhaps that's when they'll start here, too, so I'll definitely check. Thanks for letting us know a few days ago, Barbara. ;)

We will be watching on an American PBS station which runs Masterpiece Theatre. So I would assume that most American stations would be starting at the same time.
But I've been known to be wrong before. :)
I just thought they were worth mentioning again, after the discussion about sex on TV.
Jane Austen adaptations aren't known for sexuality.

Well, checked out the TV booklet that came with the paper today, and found no Jane Austen on PBS. Figure perhaps that's why they were saying, "Coming in January" this last week rather than, "Coming next week."
Apparently they aren't all showing the series at once. Maybe next week ... or the last week in January? Whatever, how we know to look for it, thanks to Barbara. ;)

Gina: Were you looking for "Jane Austen" or Masterpiece?
This link should help you find the listing for your area.

The one they showed last night was not one of the best Jane Austen's I've seen but Leisha assures me that Northanger Abbey (next week) is really good.

... appears they did start here last night. As I'd read your post (first one) long enough ago, I was expecting not weekly, but nightly, deals. I did see that Masterpiece Theatre thing yesterday, but didnt' connect it to Jane Austen.
So, I looked through every night of the week and didn't see anymore Masterpiece Theatre, so figured that it would show nightly during "the week" the series was showing. Oops! it's only a weekly thing, I now see.
Oh, well ... I missed the first one, I guess. Maybe it's on-line somewhere, and one could slowly (via dial-up maybe how-many overnights!?) DL it to watch here? But then maybe not ...............
Thanks for letting me know that it's only on Sunday pm. Duh! :o

It moved so slow. I thought she would never speak. I went on to other things and came back. She was still holding her breath.
I just love ALL of the back ground and the furniture and costumes especially the horses and carriages.
Mercy I believed I loved the whole thing. Really wonderful to watch for the settings.

I know...I was saying, "Speak up woman!"
But imagine what it must have been like to be a woman in that time, when your family really did have that much influence.
And at 27 you were considered close to unmarriageable.

It really was slow moving Laurie. If you were tired I can understand you falling asleep.
Pursuasion was the last novel Austen wrote and it is in a different style. I haven't read the novel but maybe it didn't translate as well as Sense & Sensiblity and Pride & Prejudice.

There is another movie adaptation I've seen but this one was much better. I loved the moment when he realized that he loved her too. Reminded me of my own moment with Carl. We were good friends for a couple of years and he knew he loved me long I figured out that I loved him too :)

The way he kept looking at her -- all wide-eyed -- couldn't take his eyes off her. I seem to remember that young love feeling too. Only David and I had only known each other 5 weeks. We met in December, got engaged in February and married in May. Almost 28 years ago.
He's out of town this weekend, so I've been sleeping with a DVD on -- Pride and Prejudice.

I finally got the chance to watch one of these last night ("Mansfield Park"), but didn't like it. They abbreviated and cut out WAY TOO MUCH! I had just finished reading that one a couple days before, so I was pretty disappointed.
My wife started watching productions of the Jane Austen stories a few years ago. After the last Pride and Prejudice came out, we watched it a LOT, and I finally decided to get the book. Ended up reading it twice, then went on to Emma, Sense and Sensibility and then MP.
I'm enjoying the reading a lot though. I take the el train to work, and I'm going through lots of books by putting all that time to good use. :)

It wasn't that way at first though - I came by it slowly. So... maybe she can find some half-decent feller and straighten him out a bit - the way my wife had to do me. :basic03

Barbara, decided after trying to watch the one last night, and then getting caught up in one of those rare Hallmark movies that appears only once every few months on "normal TV" (yeah, guys aren't the only channel browsers; I'll go back & forth trying to watch two things often ;)), that hese movies would be more meaningful had I been a great Jane Austen reader. Tho' I've read a lot, somehow didn't get around to her, I have to admit.
Therefore, I shall attempt to watch them, but not feel too badly if I don't get involved enough to finish each one. Last week, the Abbey one, was good. Watched it all ... did appreciate the fact that the guy, while at first denying what his friend saw from the outside (within his family), owned up to it, and then admitted not only his love for her, but how things really had been within his own family, rather than rejecting her for being real enough to say so. [denial pushes one of my buttons, for sure! ;)]

Well, actually it seemed the mother was more of a problem than some of the girls. Tho't it was rather comical when the mother told her daughter if she didn't marry the guy who asked her [Mr. Collins, right? I was channel flipping once in awhile, I admit ;)], she'd never see her again, while her dad told her just the opposite ... that he wouldn't if she did marry him ... and he wasn't all in a tither about it like the Mrs., but rather droll. [laughing now while recalling it]
EDIT: The mother's voice is hard to take, too ... high, shrill ... nearly didn't watch and sometimes my flipping off PBS was while she was going on quite a bit. I cannot take a voice like that. :(

The two younger, giggly girls were entirely "improper"
I agree about the mother's voice. I think I liked the way the mother was portrayed in the Kiera Knightly version of Pride & Prejudice much more. She was domineering and manipulative and occasionally shrill but she had some endearing qualities as well.
But, other than that, thoroughly enjoyed this.

I have been recording the movie every week because we usually go out to eat with friends after church on Sunday evening and I don't get home in time to see it. The movie is listed in the newspaper for 1 1/2 hours. That has worked out fine so far. I am very disappointed this week though. I watched the recording last night and at the end of the 1 1/2 hour time, it cut off, but the movie wasn't over yet. It ended with Mr. Darcy looking in the camera while at a dance but there were a lot of dances in that movie so that doesn't tell you anything. I am sure he was looking at Lizzie. I will have to set my timer for a longer time next Sunday because I definitely don't want to miss the end of the movie.

Do you ever wonder if Jane's change of heart to Mr. Darcy is a bit mercenary? Has she thought over Mrs. Collins' comments of how she hardly ever has to see Mr. Collins? When she see's the house, is that what does it?
Maybe in seeing Mr. Darcy in his own surroundings, she understands him more? Or maybe he's more comfortable there, so she can see what he's really like. He's certainly trying very hard to obtain her good opinion of him - that's a change.
As for me, seeing him come out of the woods fresh from a swim was enough...
And, Judy, I also detest Mr. Collins. No house would be worth it.
Barbara Moulton
18th February 2008, 10:11 AM (10:11)
I think it is a combination of many things.
1. She has learned the truth about Wickham. I think she is a fair person and has spent time acknowledging just how much Wickham's lies influenced her
2. She has reflected on her family and realized that yes...they probably did come off very badly and can understand why Darcy would be concerned that his friend not marry a girl who he thinks is only marrying him for his money.
3. She has a chance to see where Mr. Darcy lives and perhaps understands afresh just how different their circumstances were and why he might indeed have proposed in such a terrible manner.
4. And yes...bumping into him coming up from his swim probably nudged her heart along as well :-)
Do you ever wonder if Jane's change of heart to Mr. Darcy is a bit mercenary? Has she thought over Mrs. Collins' comments of how she hardly ever has to see Mr. Collins? When she see's the house, is that what does it?

Whoooa my heart when the distant Mr Darcy walked thru the wildflower fields after his swim.
I have lifted Elizabeth's character to a woman whose heart is
ruled by character not opulence . The lady servants short description of Mr. Darcy dispelled the misgivings she had about him.
Give Charlotte wide berth, in the period of this story, a woman needed to have the provision and protection of a husband. She seems to have secured both, and as clarified in the movie Charlotte tells Lizzy "I am a plain girl and 27 years old with little hope of a suitor and my parents will not live forever"
Pride and prejudice ..this classic love story is well named.
These were not simple carefree times for unattached women.

I am perusing again Pride and Prejudice, just really enjoy the two
characters, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, Mr. Collins and Charlotte and the youngest airbrain sister in the TV Masterpiece Theater version. So they are the ones in my imagination as I reread for at least the third time , this classic love story
The characters in the latest movie portraying Jane and with Donald Southerland as Mr.Bennett, captivated me,so they are inserted in my reread story. What a pleasure to read this story while imagining the characters. I can and almost hear their lilting English accents.

Ick! Ick! Ick!
Mr. Collins coming to "condole" with the disgraced sisters.
"Pastoral visitation"?
Yes - in the book he sends a letter at this point instead of visiting. But he says pretty much the same things: How awful for all of you, I pity you, it would be better if she had died, good thing for me I didn't marry one of you, etc.
I suppose for a movie though, turning a book's letter into a visit makes a lot of sense - especially with all the other key letters already in the story.

EDIT:
I'm still on my JA reading kick. I've just finished Northanger Abbey - and the only one I have left to read is Persuasion. So far, there's at least one clergyman / clergy family featured in each story - sometimes a few. Some of them are good, some not so great. As a pastor's daughter herself, I suppose Jane Austen saw a wide variety of conduct among her father's peers... and maybe got some great material for her stories from them. :)

Well, today my daughters and I rented Becoming Jane and The Jane Austen Book Club. We will watch Becoming Jane tonight. We are looking forward to it! The beauty of renting movies is that, even if I fall asleep (due to being comfortable, content and peaceful on a Sunday night), I can simply finish watching the movie the next day. :laughing

Sooooo...you aren't going to try to watch "Emma" tonight?
Leisha and I watched Becoming Jane a few weeks ago.
Edited to add: Ooops just realized it isn't on until March 23.

I didn't realize Emma would be on later this month... I'm going to read the book before the 23rd then. It's been in my "To Read" pile for quite a while.
I'm so glad you started this thread, Barbara!

Actually [at least here, anyway], they merely talked a lot about these PBS movies, comparing them, the various characters, etc. No movie tonight. ;)

I am not thrilled with this "Emma" so far. I think Gwenyth Paltrow did a much better job. An Mr. Knightly is a real grouch.

As my daughter Leisha would say, "Not even a little bit."
Never got into this during the whole two hours.

I agree...is that (this) all there is???
Sense and Sensibility hopefully will hold a greater enchantment
however, I confess , I am totally ruined by Pride and Prejudice

Well, I guess Gwenyth Paltrow did better. And, it's true, Mr. Knightly wasn't the most romantic lead man around. (I'm thinking, perhaps, Antonio Bandares would have been a better pick for this part) But, I enjoyed it as a nice relaxing way to end a busy day. :basic01

Yes, Pride & Prejudice ... not to mention Mr. Darcy who was seen again tonight, as they recapped several stories after Emma was over ... does sort of spoil one for some of her other stories, I think. [now I have to read them someday!]

The story "Emma" is a good story. I just wasn't impressed with this version.
I never bought Emma and Mr. Knightly as a couple.
I did think that Prunella Scales did a great job as Miss Bates.

Well, actually, I got home [went to look at a place after dark again ... the only time to look at first, to see if one would even dare come 'home' to it after dark!] about forty (yes, 40!) minutes into the movie, turned it on, and tho't I might be able to pick up more on what I'd already missed than I maybe did. It is hard to get into a movie that late sometimes.
OK, what I tho't I picked up was that this one dude was secretly engaged to someone of whom his family didn't approve, so he then opened became "engaged" [Emma was his used decoy?] to someone else so they'd "for sure" not find out about his real engagement & be disinherited, or something like that? And then Emma decides that the other guy's always been someone she'd fancied, after all.
I never bought Emma and Mr. Knightly as a couple.
Now, that part, after the other guy had been found out [even getting late into the movie], didn't seem real to me, either. Almost seemed as tho' she decided on the rebound that he'd not been so bad all along, after all. Didn't seem all that excited, either. Maybe, having missed their interaction in the first part of the movie---there must've been some, right??---I'd have not tho't it seemed quite so odd (as in "rebound") when they did get together ... ???
Or, do I have the story all wrong?

The main point about Emma is that she plays matchmaker successfully once and then decides that she can do it again. She plays havoc with the life of a young woman as a result.
But the Gweneth Paltrow version simply came across as a much kinder, less arrogant person.
Also, in the GP version, you sensed a certain something between Emma and Mr. Knightly right from the beginning. It just wasn't THERE in this version.

I liked the Gweneth Paltrow version much better... she comes across kinder and the chemistry was there between Emma and Mr. Knightly, I didn't get that from the PBS version.
I also couldn't get into Kate Beckinsale being Emma... I kept seeing her as a vampire slayer from Van Helsing.
