We are still waiting on the finalizing of legal and financial matters. It isn't happening as quickly as anticipated. At this stage there isn't any clarity but there should be in the next two weeks.

My goodness I'm glad to finally have something to tell y'all!
The service is planned for Saturday, March 22 at 3pm.
It will be held at Richardson Church of the Nazarene in Richardson, Tx.
That Saturday is the one in between Good Friday and Easter. I figured
people would more likely have off that weekend and be able to travel if need be.
It was also the only weekend the Hearns and Jake and I could travel without missing too much work/school.
I hope to see y'all if you can be there.:)

karen

For the time being we're staying in Australia. Jacob wants to graduate from the school he's at now and I want that, too. It's a good school with wonderful christian staff and students and all his friends here are wonderful, supportive people. After he graduates we intend to move to the US where I'll live in North Texas and Jake will go to SNU. I've insisted that he go at least 1 year there. After that we can re-assess and make more life-affecting decisions. We'd both love to come back here. I want to be a part of this church. And it's a very beautiful place and a lot less stressful/busy than most other places I've lived.

We've had to change our plans for the date of Brad's service due to unforeseen circumstances.
The service is now planned for Saturday, April 12 at 2pm at Richardson Church of the Nazarene.
I'm really sorry if this is an inconvenience but it looks like this date will be better for those of us that
are having to travel really long distances to get there. We'll have time to visit before and after the service
if it's in April.
I really hope y'all can be there ~ I'm looking forward to seeing you!

The directions on the site:
"Directions: RCN is located on the Northwest corner of the Jupiter and Renner intersection. We are conveniently located one block south of the George Bush Tollway and one mile east of I-75." (That should read US-75)
I hope this helps.
I plan to be there if at all possible.

There's a reception room across from the sanctuary at RCN that is often used for small dinners and gatherings. What about ordering in some BBQ? I'd be glad to make arrangements, and anyone attending who wants to stay and eat would just need to pay for a plate (usually around 6.00 when I've done things like this in the past.)
I find it's often harder to visit in a noisy or crowded restaurant, but I'm open to whatever you and the family would like.

I was just thinking about what Brad would want folks to wear at his service. Somehow, I can imagine him issuing an edict that all neckties be cut off with a big pair of scissors, as was the practice at a certain Dallas restaurant years ago. Then again, Brad being a native Texan, he might like string ties, but I don't have one of those.

Oh, that's not just a Dallas thing. There was a place out in AZ [NE of PHX in Scottsdale, sort of in the real-desert area] that did that, too. I'd sure want to be warned of it before wearing a nice tie that I liked [well, some guys might like a tie or two they have, if they have to wear them sometimes, anyway :p], so I could wear some funky old tie that I didn't really care for, anyway, so i wouldn't matter re its getting cut off! ;) :basic05
Came back to add that it might be another eat-outdoors-if-you-like sort of place; seems there is one besides the one we went to years ago [that wasn't the tie place. ;)]

David,
Jake and I were in Dallas this past week. I talked to Marcella Johnson, the wonderful lady there that handles funerals and the dinners around them. She needs to know how many Naznetters and family members that will be attending Brad's memorial service and she will make sure there's enough food at the church for a meal after the service. So if y'all know that you'll be there, please let her know by emailing the church at jsloan@yourchurch.org.
I'm really glad so many Naznetters are planning to come. Brad would love it!

If Brad were going to his own service, he'd be wearing the most comfortable clothing possible. He only dressed up to make other people feel better. If dress codes were left up to him, shorts and sandals would be great in summer and sweats and sports shoes would be accepted attire for colder weather. :laughing

I guess the big question is do we want to try and have a separate Naznet gathering in addition to the post Memorial service gathering or do we just want to all gather in together and catch up that way? This may be a question we need to take over to the main board to start to get an accurate idea of how many people do actually believe they will be in attendance. We are now getting down to the nitty gritty. There is 7 weeks from last Saturday until the service.

Roland, one thing I have learned through more than 10 years of NazNet is that it is very hard to pin NazNetters down in advance. As a group, we like to keep our options open. I certainly fall into that camp. I have some many variables in my life that it is hard to make commitments seven weeks in advance.
I am still working toward being there. (about 70% probability at this time.) It would be my suggestion that we not leave the church. If Naznetters went somewhere else, some would have to choose between being with the Mercer family and being with NazNet friends. If we stay at the church, it will be one big family. I am confident that family members will be pleased to have us.
Dennis M. Scott
24th February 2008, 07:11 PM (19:11)
Roland,
Naznet is only a secondary thing. No one is going to stand up at the funeral with that little "naznet" sign. It will be pleasant to see one another, but our reason for being there won't be that. As long as the family doesn't mind, we can be with them - and you, and let the naznet photo op slip away. Linda and I are planning to be there. Right now, we're still looking for the least expensive airfare. Loving Brad and being somewhat frugal aren't mutually exclusive. Some day maybe we can have a huge naznet rally - maybe in Brisbane, or something. This time, we want to express to you and Brad's family our love and support. Let's celebrate Brad, and love.
Only my opinion and open to being over ruled.

As a military retiree, I'm embarrassed to ask this question: Are there any major military installations there? I know about San Antonio and El Paso, and of course, Killeen. But what's in Dallas?
I ask because they have really nice guest quarters, really cheap...especially the USAF, which is well known for taking great care of their people.

Carswell AFB is located on the northwest side of Ft. Worth.
At least, I think it is still an active base.

It is now NAS JRB Fort Worth, TX, (Mission: The Training of Naval Air/Surface Reserve Forces)

This is a reminder. The memorial service for Brad Mercer will be next month -- Saturday, April 12 at 2pm at Richardson Church of the Nazarene
If you live in a city served by Southwest Airlines, they have some remarkably low rates. Linda and I will be flying in from Kansas City at $59 each!!!
If you plan to stay and visit after the service, please let RCN know. Linda and I have informed them that we will be there, but won't eat a meal. The person to contact is Johnnie Sloan at jsloan@yourchurch.org. Johnnie is another of those great members of the BNC class of 1965.

Okay, I need some help on the timing of the service, etc.
I'll take Dave up on getting the ride from the airport to the church. The service is at 2:00, then a meal. I'm thinking of a 7:00 flight home, which means getting back to the airport sometime before 6:00. I'm not sure how long from the church back to the airport (and will depend on someone being available to take me back to Love Field).
Is a 7:00 return flight about right or should I get one an hour earlier?

Karen, John and I are planning to drive up there for Brads memorial. Hope we can make it, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone. John thought alot of Brad, and did get to fellowship with him in Dallas quite a few years back when they got together after a service. Rosalie

I was really hoping to make it up to the services and be with and meet some of you all. Circumstances are going to keep me from making the trip up there, but my thoughts and prayers will be with ya'll.

I really hope y'all can be there ~ I'm looking forward to seeing you!
love,
karen
ps. Thanks Joel for the map to RCN on the previous thread
Karen
I am so sorry, but Linda and I are not going to be able to be there on Saturday. We will be praying for all of you.

I'm sorry to have missed you, Dave. It was a great service and Brad would have loved it.
He would have been stoked to see all the people and would have talked all day long and never even thought about food. ;-) Maybe we can meet another time, another place. :-)
