IMHO, we we live in a spirit of gratitude, contentment is almost an offshoot.
I'm not sure what you mean by "mindfulness."
Intentional simplicity -- the older I get, the more stuff I'm glad to get rid of. We're working intentionally toward simplifying our lives, and are enjoying the lessening of stress that comes from having to maintain fewer material things. Is that what you mean?
Good topic!

Mindfulness is generally about paying attention and being aware in the present moment. I have a choice to be in this moment, to be aware of what is going on around me and inside my head.
To me it is an important part of living in contentment and simplicity because one can use mindfulness to become aware of the blessing in each and every moment.
Getting rid of stuff is a big part of simplicity. But I have found that simplicity has become part of much of the rest of my life. For example, if you follow any of my contributions to the theology board you'll see that most of my posts come down to one simple word. That word is surrender. I've tried to "declutter" my spiritual journey to the things that are most important.

I have been seeking mindful decisions. It is too easy when caught in the busyness and scheduled life to not take a step back and make sure that the attitude matches one of gratitude. Intentional simplicity can still take place even in the midst of 3 young children with dance lessons, piano lessons, etc. and Bible Study's, etc. I am working towards that goal also. You can either fight against the grain, change, or adapt. Am I on track to what you were thinking, Barbara?

I have seen your posts about "surrender," and they have given me much food for thought. I've tended to be a worrier and an overthinker, and am trying to practice surrender. I love what you said about decluttering our spiritual journey to the things that are most important.
You're a wise woman -- I mean that sincerely.

I am discovering that we can choose to focus on what we don't like about our situation and become obsessed with how we think things should be. Or, we can choose to find joy and blessings in exactly where we are. Even if things are not ideal, there are always blessings to be thankful for. I list what I'm thankful for every morning. (Gets the day off on a positive note :)) And I think if we surrender to God all our thoughts and ideas on how we think things should be, we open ourselves up to joy right here and right now. This doesn't mean we bury our heads in the sand and ignore troublesome issues. Of course we pray over these things. What it does mean is we place our concerns and our lives in the hands of our loving Father and we rest assured that in all things He works for the good of those who love Him.

It is amazing what a simple change in attitude can do for someone. Instead of searching for miracles, answers, ways around issues... you can sit down as Laurie said and list every single item in which God has blessed us with. If that doesn't change your attitude, I don't know what will :)
I think this is a good thread... there is no way to focus on the negative when we are focusing on gratitude... I love it.

Laurie you said it so well.
My husband and I did this daily. What fun it is to come to the end of the day, week, month or year and see how the Lord was right there and did it ALL just because we took time for Him to guide us.
Very good writing Laurie!!

'"Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend... when we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that's present / love, health, family, friends, work, the joys of nature and personal pursuits that bring us pleasure / the wasteland of illusion falls away and we experience Heaven on earth.”

Having pastored 6 small churches and God directing me to be a full time pastor's wife and stay-at-home mom, we were forced to live simply. Until this pastorate I never had extra money for shopping so I learned not to enjoy shopping and learned not to spend on non-essentials. Now I do not care for knick knacks and extra things.
When my mother passed away and we had to clean out her apartment in such a short time, it gave me the desire to come home and downsize.
I imagine Mother Theresa was the perfect example of simplicity.
But then I do not believe simplicity has to always be about material things. Sometimes I have to simplify my life. I often find myself doing everything in the church that no one else will do, including the things I enjoy doing. And I have to release some of it to be able to enjoy being a part of the church life.
I am sure that busy women and busy mothers go through the same thing...how to simplify their daily lives so they can enjoy life more.
Being mindful....being mindful of what God would have me do today, this week, this month, this year.
Being mindful of the needs of other around me.
Being mindful takes time to stop and listen and look. Not be so wrapped up in "doing" that I miss opportunities to minister to others, even in my own home.
God has always given me the gift of contentment in where I live. I have always made each parsonage my home no matter what that home was like...apartment, mobile home, very old house, very new house, etc.
I have not always been content with my circumstances at times. There are times I "want out of here," whereever I am at the time. LOL

Gratitude is an intentional practice. Gratitude is a learned habit. Gratitude is sometimes a sacrifice...a sacrifice of praise when you do not feel like it. Gratitude is finding things to be thankful for in times when the rest of my life is black.
Sometimes I fail to show my gratitude to God.
As we pull in the garage after every trip I always say out loud, "Thank you, Lord, for a safe trip." We pray before we leave and thank the Lord as we return.

I think that the older I get, the more that irritating people, unnecessary worry, disappointments and heartaches all start to fade, in the light of what the Lord really wants me to experience, in my own heart, and live out in my daily life. Paul says in Philippians, "Finally, Brethern, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things which ye have both learned and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you." I've gone through so many real life changes these last several years, and finally--passages like this one, are starting to really penetrate the depths of my soul. Sometimes, less is more--less trying, and more leaning.

My husband and I learned later on (after we were married and in debt) that living simple and gratitude really took practice. We are not there, yet. But in the years that we have tried to re-learn many things we learned as children, having children has really brought this to our attention. Our 3rd grader has classmates with cell phones. Her 1st question? When can I have one???? I laughed and said that the only reason her dad has one is that it is a company phone. She does not get one before her dad :) So to teach our children the basics of living within our means, gratitude for what we have- it needs to start now. Even though my husband and I are still paying off debts, we have our focus on the current lifestyle and examples that we are setting. That verse in Philippians is great! So very true.

My husband and I just sat at the diningroom table (purchased at an auction for a song) and had a cup of tea, listened to worship music and played a game together.
I looked across at him and said, "We have a good life."
In just those 30 minutes my heart, spirit, soul and body were nourished.
You don't need to spend a lot of money to have these moments.

When I hear (read) "simplicity", my first thought is "stuff" and getting rid of it. But I've learned that "stuff" can also clutter our mind and thoughts. The longer I live the less I focus on stuff, either variety. My focus seems to be more on gratitude, drawing closer to Him and enjoying what crosses my path. Our pastor frequently talks about being Jesus to those we meet. I think I'd have to say that that has been my focus of late.

This verse helps me prioritze - "declutter" my life so to speak. :) For example, if I find I'm running around like a chicken with its head cut off, I ask myself, where and on what am I spending my time? I think of this verse. I think of what I treasure most. Then I put my time and effort into these things, and eliminate (or at least reduce) the rest. This has helped me with contentment. It also gives me time to focus on what is really important and what I'm grateful for.

Well, today was a blessing. Our family was snowed in and could not go to work or school. So, we did the dutiful thing, of course, and got some chores done ... but we also had lots of fun, fun, fun in the snow. We were snowmobiling around our property, laughing and enjoying each other. It was just plain and simple fun!!! So, as the evening falls upon us, I am thanking God for the gift of a family and an unexpected day off to spend with them. :)

This is such a good example. We could look out the window and lament about the snow, or we could turn our gaze back to our home and family and rejoice in them.

Yes, even our jobs can be a blessing. In my situation, actual hours of work are not flexible. However, my work is very accommodating in that they welcome my kids any time. So, I'm able to spend all of the Christmas and March breaks with my girls, and work at the same time. I even get to take them on fun and interesting field trips when I'm working with the school agers. This has been a great blessing. :)

I was excited to be able to share about how blessed I am with my job, and then to find others feel the same is so encouraging to me. I started a job share last July. It was a brand new position and I had never been employed there before. I started only working on Friday. Then in January, I moved into 2 days a week. The lady I job share with and I have hit a very bumpy road. Last night I was fretting that I really wanted this to work, and my husband pulled me back into reality and reminded me that God was in control. The fact that this job has worked at all has God's hand all over it. Today, when I met with the Fire Chief (I am his administrative assistant) I found out how valued I was there and how pleased they are with my contribution to this position. God is good! It would have been very easy to fall into a poor me attitude. But with God in control, I had no where to go but up, and praised Him for a wonderful opportunity and a day full of blessings.

I have had two wonderful days at work. As a chaplain, I am so privileged to have so many deeply meaningful encounters.
I wish I could share details but I decided a long time ago that it would not be ethical for me to share (even without giving names) the details of what patients tell me in confidence.
But what a blessing. It just happened that I had opportunity to speak to five patients in a two day period and each one of them brought me a special blessing or insight.
God is good.

Today I read this quote from Barbara Kingsolver.
"My parents taught me this — to gasp, and feel lucky. They gave me the gift of making mountains out of nature's exquisite molehills."
Isn't this a delightful twist on an old metaphor? As I read it, I was reminded of those lines written by William Blake.
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.
These quotes point to one of life's ironies. If we become consumed with tedious little things, our lives lose a sense of balance. But when we take the time to notice precious little things, our lives become more stable.

Well, last week was busy and challenging at work. But I find, the more challenge there is, the more blessings arise. By the end of the week, I had been hugged by a collegue (when I was in tears), forgiven (when I messed up someone's book order - when they were really looking forward to the books), had someone ask me to pray for them, had one of the more challenging kindergarten boys greet me with the words "I love you, Laurie", had another collegue take over a task I was supposed to do but forgot ... the list just keeps going on! Anyway, it seems that when things get really tough and discouragement could easily set in, God just works through other people to lift my spirits. I feel very blessed today.

I'm just praising God for the sunshine and warmer temperatures.
I would love for it be suddenly "really warm" but I know that would cause many flooding problems with the amount of snow still around. A gradual warming trend will be better than a sudden thaw.
I read the other day that there is a pile of snow in Montreal (snow that has been dumped by the snow removal trucks). This pile of snow is so big that, if it were not broken up, there would still be part of it there NEXT winter.
One of the men in our church mentioned to me today that it was four years since his wife passed away. And coming back from the visitation in 2004 we were driving in a fierce snow storm. This winter has seemed long but he reminded me that we were getting really bad weather in March that year too.
Maybe winter is like child labour. A woman forgets the pain of it afterward and only remembers the joy? :)

Yes, we'll probably forget all about any frustrations from the snow, and just remember the nice parts. Parts like the beauty of a white Christmas. Things like being snowed in and unable to leave the house, which left nothing to do but catch up on reading and baking! Plus, this winter was very conducive to snowmobiling, which can be a fun sport.
Of course, all this being said, I still am looking forward to spring! :basic07

Discussing the weather when you live in Texas they say "If you do not like the weather just stick around because it will change" which is true. It never snows in Houston and went from 88 record this week to a drop in cooler temps. I am hoping for rain this week, really. :basic01

Laurie, I'm so glad God has proven himself faithful in your life another month. Our last decade has involved so many months--even years--where I couldn't tell you how God did it, but he did. I truly believe that our faith grows as God is faithful--it's not something we can manufacture.
I think this is such a wonderful and encouraging discussion. I've found intentional living to be such a blessing in my life when I remember to do it. With our twins being born 2 months premature and requiring so much during their pg and in the years after their birth I am finding myself with 3 year olds and my older children that much older and sort of scratching my head wondering where it went. I've been striving to live more in the moment instead of in survival mode.
Years ago a pastor encouraged us to spend a weekend not asking God for anything--but when a need would pop into our head just thanking God for the answer he already had ready. It really made me aware of how whiny I had gotten with God. Now I try to do this as a discipline if I am finding myself feeling discontent. It really serves to refocus.

Yes...it's a lot easier I think for me to live in the moment... now that my children are grown and I am not constantly picking up after them. My livingroom actually stays neat and tidy every day. All I need to do is dust and vacuum once a week. That's huge for me.
My youngest does have a habit of phoning a lot. Right now I am trying to help her trim an essay down to 2500 words. Since she originally had 5,000 words that's quite a feat. But she is getting there. :) And I praise God that she turns to me.
I've had a tough couple of weeks at the hospital, many challenges and one really heartbreaking page to Emergency. So I have had to very intentionally focus on the blessings in my life and nurture my spirit in the evening.

Speaking of music on my computer.
I have bought a lot of movie soundtracks over the years. From movies like Little Women, Meet Joe Black, The Truman Show...etc. Usually, on every CD about 75% of the music is beautiful. But then there will be some tracks that are not to my taste.
Soooo....I loaded the CD's on to my computer but deleted the songs I don't like.
Makes for some very peaceful listening music.
Which is actually putting me to sleep. So I shall take myself off to bed.

Well considering that I am feeling a little under the weather, and realizing that my hair might look better and stay nicer longer if i got a perm, that is what i have decided to do tomarrow. So no more straight blowdrying for me, and will see how this perm will do. It has been ages since i have had one. It is a nice color tho, i think, and had it done about the 1st of March. I like listing things that I am grateful for. I started a running list of such things in my journal last year and it is a blessing to read over it from time to time.
Here's a few of mine:
I am thankful for my healthy parents - age 81 and 79.
I am thankful for my health - especially important to me after suffering a major stroke 4 years ago
I am thankful for my new little boston terrier puppy.
I am thankful for a loving God who designed me with a unique purpose.

Wow great pics! I read quickly through this thread and just kept thinking about one of my favorite verses...
"Let your gentleness be evident to all. God is near." Phil 4:5
This verse has reminded me to be careful what comes out of my mouth as well as my mind and heart thoughts. ( Boy can I ever get into trouble with my mouth, mind and heart!!!!) I don't know if this is changing the subject and I don't mean to. With the posts about how busy we can get in our lives I often need a reminder, when dealing with family and others, that my gentleness is so important. Can you make this fit in? I don't really know where all I'm going with this but isn't it also interesting that the second part of the scripture says, "God is near"? I mean what a great reminder that we are always so close to the other side? Just a breath away!
Then again, why would Paul write the other half of this other than to just remind us of how important it is to have the gentleness of Christ evident in our lives.
Oops, I really think I took this a bit off track. Anyway, that's my ramblings for the night.:o

I've been thinking about this Londa. I don't think it is taking things off track. I handle things gently when I know that they are precious. So my "dollar store" cereal bowls are not treated as gently as my grandmother's china.
Do you think that being "gentle" fits into simplicity and gratitude because gentleness requires that you look at each person as "precious"? If you regard the people in your life as precious then you will indeed find your heart filled with gratitude.

The weather was beautiful today. It was sunny and only a light jacket was required in the afternoon. My toddlers at work really enjoyed playground in the afternoon. PRAISING GOD!!!
1- My husband is home from the hospital and getting stronger each day. He went to work today for 2 1/2 hours. I kept him on the same schedule as my kindergartner :laughing
2- I start my 3rd work day next Monday. I have computer, furniture, and the okay to start when everything is installed.
3- My girls' are healthy! My oldest daughter has reoccuring ear infections and for the most part has 1 every month... it has been 3 months!!! Her new eardrum is finally functioning and her hearing is improving. We have worried and prayed for her for 8 years.
I could just go on and on. Sometimes my time in the wilderness feels like 40 years, when in reality it is a couple of weeks at a time. But when I invite God into my pity party, it doesn't last long. All I can do is praise HIS name!

I have found the best way to intentional simplicity is to get back to an intentional Sabbath. I read Working The Angles by Eugene Peterson and it challenged me more than any other book I've read. (Outside of the Bible.) I don't mean to observe a Sabbath legalistically. Rather, doing it on purpose and protecting that time set aside for nothing else but reflecting, prayer and celebration of what God has done in that week. It's like having a personal prayer summit with the Triune Godhead and yourself. Everything else falls into it's proper place, priority and perspective when I am disciplined enough to do this regularly. A natural by product of this is mindful simplicity.

Today I am greatful for health insurance... We have just received the bill from my husband's hospital stay, then while the girls' were with a babysitter tonight, the middle daughter (6) fell during freeze tag and broke her arm in 2 places. So instead of panicking, I am going to look at the balances of these bills and praise God that when our insurance takes care of their share, our amount due will be smaller. It is still a lot of money, but it could have been so much worse if we didn't have insurance.

Mindfulness: I've been working on this one. If something bothers me, I try to make it part of my life NOT to do that thing (unsuccessfully, often).
One thing that bothered me was the looking-right-past-you face when you are trying to talk to someone, especially managers at work.
Another thing...along the same line...is that people hear the first few words and already form an answer and an opinion and they don't even hear what you have to say.
So... to deal with my own frustration, if approaching a person who tends to do this type of thing, I preface it, "Now wait until I finish before you answer," or "listen to the whole story."
For my own change, I attempt, even in cases where I think I know the answer, to allow the person to tell the whole story, to talk it out, get it out of their system, and I really DO LISTEN for something that I might not have thought of, or something I can direct my answer to, specifically. It helps me focus. And they know I care.

There were several stores that did this in Phoenix. Got back here, expected that was something they may have started doing also while I was living out West, and haven't found one yet who does this. I didn't think it was so awful ... rather a little "reward" for having bro't it to their attention, so they can change their computerized register system so it will ring right for the next how-many times until the same is over.

I am greatful that I work with compassionate people. We had a walk in medical (I work as an admin for a fire station). She was an 89 year old woman who wasn't feeling well, so her husband wanted her to have her blood pressure checked. She was not doing well so the Captain called over the paramedics (from next door) and had them come over. They agreed that she should be transported. I watched and helped as needed as they were right in front of my desk. It wasn't until they got this little, tiny, fragile woman on the stretcher and wheeled her out that I started to cry. When the firefighters came in they saw me (feeling quite shaken by the ordeal) they took the time to talk about it.. then one firefighter came back in about 2 minutes later and prayed for me. I know that I am where God has me here and feel so blessed!

I'm moving from working with young children as an early childhood educator, to office administration work. I'm looking forward to the change. I'm going back to my current job for one more week, and then will move on to the new one.

I wish you could all have seen Laurie this past week. She is "beaming".

Friday was my last day at my old job. I was fine, until I had to say goodby to one of my favourite children. She cried, hugged me and would not let go. I cried then.:gen06 But now I am looking forward to my new job starting on Tuesday.
God is good. :)

Laurie- it is not quite Tuesday (I have an hour to go here in Idaho), but I have been praying for your transition and for you to have a wonderful time tomorrow!

Thank you Sheya. :basic01 I had a wonderful first day. It has been a very smooth transition so far.
I am just so thankful to God for the opportunity of this job.

I really wanted to resurrect this thread today. :basic01
It is Thanksgiving here in Canada, so I am pausing today to thank God for his blessings. We had our dinner last night and it was wonderful. But, as in any family, there were some issues (nobody has the perfect life). However, I had my mother in law - who is really more like a mother - to stand beside me, hold my hand when things got overwhelming, etc. So, I am praising God that He has given me this friend who stands by me in the rough times as well as the good; who I can both celebrate with and cry with.
Also, on a lighter note, I am praising God that my sciatic nerve problems are diminishing rapidly. Today, already, I have been able to get back to cleaining my house. I have been able to reorganize the cupboards the way I like them. The home will again be sparkling!
And, finally, I am thankful for the coming Christmas season, because today, I do plan to get one of my Christmas trees up! :basic01

When I woke up this morning, I was praising God. Just because HE Is.
