Today, I was at Leon Martin's funeral. I picked out a person I thought looked like David Pettigrew from his picture on NazNet. Thank goodness, I did not speak because now the picture of David Pettigrew on NazNet has changed.

Now I am wondering who was that OLD man. :)

So will the real Rev. Pettigrew please stand up.

Mamie, {{{ hugs }}} to your family, for I know you could use a few right now.

As for David ... wasn't that the guy who had Albert's picture as his avatar ... as in Einstein? If not, it was someone who looked a lot like him [unless that was another NN'er who used his picture].

I guess I missed the post saying that Leon Martin died. Leon was a dear friend in years past. He will be missed.

Mamie, David's avatar was a picture of J. O. McClurkan. From his ministry Nashville First Church and Trevecca Nazarene University came into being. I don't think that is who you saw because he has been dead for many years. Maybe Rev. McClurkan has a twin. What I mean is, he has someone that looks just like him. They say we all have one somewhere.

Oh, my goodness! You mean the guy wore his white hair bushy just like Einstein, enough so that I tho't that's whose picture he was using? Oh, dear! [well, I guessed wrong, Mamie] ;)

Hi Mamie,

I am sorry for your loss, and also sorry I had to miss Bro. Martin's funeral. He was loved by many people in my church.

The reason I had to miss his funeral was because I was in Nampa, ID at the NNU Wesley Conference.

So, if you would like to see a picture of the real David Pettigrew standing up, please look here. (http://www.naznet.com/community/showpost.php?p=170151&postcount=2)

I'm in the last picture on the bottom row, holding a microphone.

I rue the day that I ever used McClurkan as my avatar. I has caused so much confusion!

Has McClurkan communicated from acoss the great divide as to his feelings in the matter?

Hello Mrs. Vivian

As a lifelong member of Nashville First Church and a 4th generation nazarene, I guess I am an indirect product of Rev. McClurkan's vision for Nashville First Church. Our church has such a rich heritage.

Some day you and Cindi and the family will have to visit Nashville.

Interestingly enough, McClurkan came up in Scott Daniel's presentation at the NNU conference. Did you know that:

1) His group of Cumberland Presbyterians was one of the last to be absorbed into the Church of the Nazarene? He only consented to the merger on his deathbed.

2) The two main reasons for this were he did not believe in women preachers, and he was a strong premillenialist?

3) That his wife became an ordained preacher after his death? It kind of makes you wonder, were there any other witnesses besides her to his consent to join with the Nazarenes:basic03?

4) Now for the kicker - many in his group smoked. So, as a compromise, they were allowed to keep smoking when they became Nazarenes. Now, new people who joined their churches would not be allowed to smoke, but if you were part of McClurkan's group, and you smoked BEFORE the merger, you could keep on a smokin' till you reached the pearly gates.

So, Marsha, are there any really, really old people still smoking at Nashville First?
