Grrrrrrr .....
In 2004 I deleted McAfee ( or so I thought ) and installed Panda Platinum.
Now with the release of Panda 2006 I have hit a wall. 2006 says McAfee still resides within my system and so Panda will not install.
I have gone to McAfee and printed and used their info on removing remaining files but some must be dodging under my radar.
I deleted all references to McAfee and Network Associates and exe`s and dll`s.
I have WindowsME .... anyone here have any suggestions.
Helpppppppppp!`
Every pc sold should come with a large hammer :fun04

I hesitate to give this advice, because the registry isn't a place for most users, but I'm sure you could solve the problem by removing the Mcafee section from the registry. I don't have 98 or ME, but I believe the structure is about the same as XP. At the run command type: 'regedit' to get to the registry, then double click on hkey_local_machine (or click the plus sign by it), then open up the software section. There you should see what looks like a lot of folders of various manufacturers, find the one that contains Mcafee or is labeled such. If you delete that it shouldn't hurt anything, since it is removed except for the registry entries. BE VERY CAREFUL IN THE REGISTRY. Good luck. :)

Thanks Bob, that`s one I missed ( registry ) but same ole - same ole.
Still something lurking where I have not been. Seems that Panda 2006 is a total rebuild since even Panda 2005 has to be deleted before 2006 will install.
Now if some tech person from McAfee and/or Panda will just answer maybe I could resolve this.
Thanks for your help,
Duane

Have you followed all of these instructions from McAfee?

Hi Adam and thanks for the reply. I would have replied sooner but haven`t had much success with Panda.
I have done all that McAfee says to do and I did check my registry even though nothing still lurked there.
Panda finally replied to my questions, even sending me an updated ini file which searches for competing scanware when you install. Had a bear of a time getting the install exe file to accept the new ini file.
When I finally got Panda2006 installed then windows went on a rampage and sent me repeatedly to safe-mode on startup. Finally got that settled then Panda2006 would not allow me to use FireFox (browser) or Thunderbird (email) with Panda`s firewall.
Finally got the firewall tweaked for Mozilla then on restart windows sent me back to safe-mode. Ended up doing a complete uninstall of Panda2006 while in safe-mode then reinstalled Panda2005 in windows and everything works great once more.
Panda has made 2006 a complete rewrite and you have to completely uninstall 2005 because the two are not compatible. I suspect the 2006 version is heavy on windowsXP. Something is sure not right as I have used Panda for several years, like it very much and never had the slightest problem with earlier versions and upgrades.
I am waiting to get an answer from Panda about "what next?" do I try and I asked about support for 2005 - till my license expires in August of 2007!
Sorry I am rambling on so - I needed to vent :fun03

I had a similar experience with Norton A/V 2004. Something about the motherboard chipset on my Dell machine didn't like the low level software that NAV attempted to install. I even went so far as to reformat my machine and install NAV first. Still didn't work. That's when I switched to AVG and wrote off the $40 I spent on NAV as a sunk cost.
