View Full Version : Disappointed in Idol this year

after all the hype about it being the best year ever....it's not. last week when the girls sang on the commercial, rocker Amanda made a grotesque hand gesture and all of the singing by both men and women was blase. Asia'h is the only female singer (IMO) that has any wow factor, and none of the men do. There is no Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sprarks, etc so far that I can distinguish. I know it is early in the competition but I knew from week one of every other season who would do best and I was right (ok except for Sanjaya, what a joke) and alot of the contestants are just down right smart mouths to the judges.
I hope it is just me that is cranky, but I am NOT enjoying Idol this year. I still like the premise of someone that may not otherwise be discovered being discovered and sharing their talent with the world, but still.....

I thought the guys did well tonight, except for the first couple/few. David was amazing at the end doing "Imagine"....that was great.

Yes he was! To quote what Randy often says, "Dawg, you made that your OWN!"
Gutsy move for a 17-year-old kid.

There were a couple of guys other than that last one who did Imagine that didn't do bad, either. I did pick [in my mind] one of the ones who'll be gone come elimination night ... possibly the 2nd one, too. We shall see how our own "vote" came out.
Just now have AI.com loading; one's supposed to be able to vote there free, rather than calling & paying $1/vote, right? Tho't that's the way it works, anyway. We shall see. ;)

The Chikeazi (I butchered that name, sorry) and a couple of others I thought did real well too. I like Michael Johns, but he did not do well tonight.
That was so gutsy to do Lennon though.......

Well, didn't find a place to vote [is it too late?], but did find someplace to click on short profiles. Under the one re this Chikesi dude in the spot where it asks their "proudest moment," his was re being born again. His family came from Nigeria, think he said on Idol tonight.

I've only watched about 50% this year. While I am not impressed with the talent, it's even worse that the producers certainly seem to be planting contestants. Have you read up about how much past experience most of these people have?
The Irish girl has recorded records already (I had actually like her until I found that out...I thought if you had already recorded you couldn't even be on the show?). Robbie Carrisco or whatever the rocker guy's name is even dated Britney Spears. And there are other examples that I read about online.

It doesn't cost anything to call in and vote by phone.

Didn't bother to get #'s while it was on, so that would have to be done on-line, too. 'Guess I wasn't all that into voting, since I didn't try until a bit late, anyway. ;)

From what I have heard, this is not really new to the show. When they have 20,000 plus people try out for the show, it is pretty understandable that the ones with some experience will shine a little better during an audition. This is also, not new to the show. Kelly Clarkson had a contract before she was on the show, as did Taylor Hicks. I am not sure why this is getting so much more run this year, its not a new thing to the show.
I also don't really understand why someone who has been in the business some and maybe not been backed or promoted well, should be shunned? If the show is about finding the best talent, why would they be considered less worthy, just because they have had some success?

I gotta say, the one thing this show has done for me is raise my respect level for the singer of the band "Heart". I did not realize how powerful of a voice she has until I see other people trying to sing it.

Here in the Netherlands Idols is really good this year. Nikki, who will probably win it, is a Christian, as are the other three quarter finalists. They prayed together before the beginning of each show, and each have a great testimony for Christ. This coming Saturday is the final. It's gonna be a good one.

I agree. I expected it to be so good, that it would be hard to eliminate people. I have to agree with Simon when he said...he can't figure out some of those girls and what kind of singers they are.
During the tryouts and hollywood week, they sang alot better than they have the past 2 wks.
No one has been consistant with their singing so far except David Archeltta (however you spell his last name) in my opinion anyway.
Unless the voters get silly, like they did last year and keep voting for bad singers and he gets voted off....I expect he might win.
Should be interesting as always, and i will hear myself say again...."I'm not watching that again next season" :basic05

Wendy, that David Archuleta was the one who sang "Imagine," right? 'Guess I wasn't paying 100% to it, having to ask, huh? ;)
Whoever it was that sang it, did a bang-up job on it ... did it really well.

I don't get the David Archuleta hysteria. He's got a nice enough voice and he seems like a really swell kid but I just don't see any passion or power behind what he's doing. I think perhaps he's a bit too young and hasn't lived enough. The way I'd say it is that he seems like a good singer, but he's just not really an artist yet.

Have fun w/your basement. I'll be watching, too. Even if they're not quite like some might think they "should be," hey, it's something musical! There's enough bad TV on these days, that something musical is a nice thing. ;)

Yes, he may not have been singing from a ton of experiential "angst," Kevin [HA!], but he did a fine job on the song, actually. There were a couple of others that didn't do badly that night he sang "Imagine," either. Tho' there were maybe a dozen who sang, you wade through all that's there to not miss the "good stuff." ;)

so far I don't see that wow factor in any of the contestants. I am disappointed because I know there are more Carrie Underwoods and Daughtrys out there.
oh well I am still watching as it is a tradition with my youngest daugther and now my oldest granddaughter but boo...

I've been really impressed with most of the contestants this year. I don't remember another season that had so much talent with 16 still remaining. Always before I had no trouble at this point picking out about half that didn't belong there. I don't see that this year.

I agree with you that it is hard to pick out just 2 to go home, I think they all should lol
by this time past seasons I more or less knew who would go on to the finals, there was always a huge distinction. I don't see it so far this year....someone should have wowed me by now lol
