View Full Version : How do you get rid of wire coat hangers?

I cleaned up my husband's closet today. I prefer plastic hangers so I rehung all his clothes and picked up all the wire hangers that were on the floor as well.
So.....what do you do with these things? How do you get rid of them? I checked our town website and they aren't accepted in with our recycling boxes.

perhaps a local artist or high school art teacher could use them for some project? I know the art teacher at my school (7th & 8th) is ALWAYS looking for "junk" that she can incorporate into art projects.

Really...you mean I can send them back from whence they came? How joyous!
I'll call the dry cleaners tomorrow.

My solution would be the "mother" of all community wiener roasts.http://www.naznet.com/fellowship/chat1/images/smilies/smile1.gif

I deliver for a local dry cleaner; almost every customer we have leaves the old wire hangers out each week for me to take back.

Thrift stores like Goodwill would take them too.

Put a few in your car....you never know when you might need to tie up your tailpipe or hold some other broken part together.
Also they make a classy looking radio antenna for your car or boom box/ghetto blaster.
If you own dogs wire several together and make a wire chain for your dog when you drive off so they don't chase you down the driveway into the street.
You can also wire gates shut with them pretty good. you can also use them to reinforce hurricane fences where people or animals have previously crawled through rather than replacing the whole fence section.
When you plant a new tree or vine use it to wire them up straight to the fence post you hammer in the ground next to them.
If you are artsy, use them to hang heavy picture frames instead of those little wires that always break.
You can also hang plates (including decorative license plates from your old truck) on the wall.
In the garage there are many uses for them. Including fashioning tool holders you nail to the wall. Also you make one shaped like a hook to pick your rachet out of those hard to reach places in your engine compartment.
And keep one fashioned like a slim jim to "break" into your car when you lock your keys in so you don't have to call a locksmith.
I could name some more uses but you get the idea. They are universal adapter for so many situations never leave home without one.:p
And if you find you still have extra try giving them to a dry cleaners or a thrift store.

David Pettigrew just posted some stuff on the Renewal forum, under "Nazarene Fears', about coat hangers. I think he has some kind of contact with an evangelist who might be able to use them.

Was going to say that it used to be one could be used to get into cars, but nowadays --- for the last how-many years, anyway --- they make the lock pulls without the ridge at the top that hangers used to be able to get ahold of, if necessary, since others could get into your vehicle that way, too.
And, uh, Dale ... have you ever gotten into your vehicle b/c your keys were locked inside, then put the hanger in there for "next time" ... only to realize that the hanger you were going to use "next time" to get in was inside the car, not outside?

If the hangers are the copper looking ones any welders shop should take them.
I use to braze with them years ago.

Well, mostly, I unbutton the top shirt button, pull down kinda fast, and suddenly they're not in the shirt anymore.

Or you could just send them directly to the Communist Party.

No, already thought that out for next time: see when you get done breaking into your car you wire it to the grill so you can get to it next time or you wire it around your exhaust pipe. If you don't want to see it just tuck it in side the grill and leave a small piece hanging out you can grab with a finger.:o
See with coat hangers around, why even buy one of those fancy spare key holder boxes?

But you've gotta remember, Dale ... coat hangers no longer work to break into even your own car ... unless you've got a really old one, or replaced the newer lock handles with some of the old ones.

Bury them in your back yard and up will spring a clothes rack for your outdoor clothing.
