Referring to the 20th Century, "There is evidence that the northern hemisphere is undergoing a slight cooling trend since the middle of this century, following a warming trend of the order of one or two degrees Celsius (centigrade) for the first half of the century. On a much longer scale, the present geologic era exhibits temperatures somewhat higher than the average of some 10,000 years ago. Unfortunately, there is no possibility of studying long-term trends from direct observations, because continuous records of elements such as temperature and precipitation for periods of 200 years or so are available for only a handful of locations. Widespread observations for the inhabited regions of the earth have been made for only a few decades and are still lacking in some of the developing countries.
