I expect to have a 1200 foot house to paint (yes pretty much ALL the rooms!) and am wondering if more expensive paint is worth the price.

I am a painter by trade. You get what you pay for when you buy most paint. You can get pretty good prices at Lowes or Home Depot. Depending on what you get, you'll pay around $20 a gallon. If you go to Sherwin Williams, you'll get good paint but it does cost more. Just don't get the bargain stuff from anywhere. If you put a few more bucks into good paint, it'll be easier to work with and get a better finish. I do like the soft woven roller covers from SW. They are shed resistant and put a smooth coat on. Have fun! :fav17

I really like Sherwin Williams but, yeah, it's a little more pricey. Not as much as I expected, but it was. What amazed me was how easily they pulled one exact color from a multi-colored tile!
Higher end brands from Lowe's work good too :) We're doing our home one room at a time!

We really like "Behr". I think it is sold at Home Depot. It was not sold at Lowes, last time I checked. It is also a little higher priced.

I've not had good experiences with Sherwin Williams, but have liked using Ben Moore. Apparently it is easy for me to apply SW too thin, and require additional coats. I've not had that experience with Ben Moore. My favorite painter also preferred to use BM, but found Behr difficult. Likely you will find about as many favorites as there are painters and paint brands.
Probably 90% of a successful paint job is in the preparation.

I like all of them - but it has to be oil based for two reasons:
- I am not allergic to it. I am deadly allergic to latex based paint.
- I found that oil based paint last much longer and looks better longer.
Have fun painting. I will be doing that when I get home from over seas.

Make sure to get a low/no-VOC to cut down on the fumes. I have asthma and allergies and painted our master when we came (Sherwin Williams, and it's *lovely*) and wow, what a difference the low-VOC type of their paint made.

In the field of environmental issues, there is now open conversation regarding comparing latex paint with lead paint, suggesting that the overall affects of latex paint is worse than that of lead paint. While to specific individuals, lead is worse, it only affects those who injest it through the mouth: a small group of children. Latex becomes airborne, is taken into the lungs of a far great number of people, and overall creates a much larger health problem. So, just about the time we get all the lead paint removed, . . .

When I painted in high school and college, I always enjoyed the taste of Dutch Standard paints myself. (I think that is a local Paint to the Ohio region, not sure)
hmm something is wrong with that statement, even if I did end up tasting the paint.

Hans would prefer that you use, Dutch Boy.

Actually, we don't have it here! Well known Dutch paint brands are Sikkens and Histor.

My brothers used sell Dutch Boy paint in their store and I was pretty sure that the name really had nothing to do with paint products sold in the Netherlands. It was just the old Franklin syndrome of punstering that got to me.
