Thoughts on the Grace of Prayer

Augustine observed, “The best disposition for praying is that of being desolate, forsaken, stripped of everything.” All our offerings to God are tainted with sin. Thus, there is no acceptance without grace.

Our approach to God should not merely be ritualistic, philosophical or mystical. Our prayer should not be a laundry list. God is not simply impressed with our sacrifice, gestures, and knowledge.

Prayer is a communion with God. We approach God with emptiness and conviction. Without God’s grace we are unable to make confession. We are forgiven by grace. We have joy in the heart by grace.

We must always remember that God is God and we are human beings. Therefore, we cannot hedge around and hide behind pretense. W must accept our weaknesses but don’t allow them to drive us in isolation.

Prayer brings us before God as a one-minded person. We stand in His light and we accept and adore His holiness. God is always forgiving. His grace allows us to be in relationship with Him.

One’s prayer life reveals his or her character. Our identification is in Christ. We should seek to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit, God’s love, peace, and joy.

Prayer is a gracious moment with God.
