I cannot help but be thankful today for a root canal at 8 a.m.
I've had pain for a couple of weeks and just now had time to go in, along with the office having an appointment.
I'm grateful for having a dentist I trust, having the ability to visit one, and dental insurance to help defray costs. I've been in the place where none of those things were true.
Doesn't it make you wonder who first thought of doing a root canal?
Were a couple of cowboy dentists sitting around a fireplace chatting? Did one say, "Hey, if it weren't fer them there nerves, them teeth wouldn't hurt."
"Why shore, so why don't we jist yank 'em out?"
"Well, I'll try it if you kin git a willin' victim."
And I wonder if that first victim were really willing... :-)

HA HA -- I have wondered that about many things that we have at our disposal in this modern world!!! Like -- who was the patient during the first colonoscopy???? Sorry, I work for a GI specialist, and it never ceases to amaze me what we have to put our bodies through just to find out that we don't have cancer......LOL
I've had one root canal, and I must say that it wasn't all that bad. What made me laugh, though, is that when I went to the dentist's office who was to do my root canal, it was the most gorgeous doctor's office I'd ever visited. Their specialty is -- ROOT CANALS. All day long, ROOT CANALS. The waiting room has an assortment of beverages and little cookies set out before you on little tablecloth-clad serving tables. There are fresh flowers all over the place. When it is your turn, they ask you to go into the restroom and brush your teeth. The restroom has a beautiful basket with little individually wrapped toothbrushes and toothpastes. And on a lovely table in the restroom there was a huge bouquet of fresh flowers. Yes, FRESH flowers!! The thought of their flower bill alone was overwhelming to me!!
So I mentioned to the dental assistant walking me back to the procedure room -- "Your office is so beautiful that I have rarely thought about why I'm here!!" Her response "That's the whole idea!!" LOL Amazing, isn't it??
And to think it probably all started with, "Now, Hank, if we'd jest use this here drill, I bet we could keeel them thar nerves that are a-causin' all that thar pain......"
LOL
Good one, Wanda!

Wal, podner, Ah think thet's mighty humorous.
Thanks to both Wanda and Dana for a smile.
I've had two root canals, and guess what!
They did not deaden the tooth during either one.
Didn't hurt a bit.
Oh, and they did not knock me out to do it, either.
Maybe I could have been that first "victim." (NO WAY!)

I had to laugh when I read your two postings. I just want you to know that within the last two weeks I have had a root canal and a colonoscopy. What amazed me in both was technology. The root canal specialist did what he did while looking through a microscope while off to the side above his head was a conveniently placed flat screen TV on which I was able to watch an hour of Fox News.
With the colonoscopy--they decided to allow me to watch everything on the TV monitor while sort of knocked out. All I remember the doctor saying was: "beautiful...just beautiful". I really don't know what he meant.
But yes--I too have wondered who the first "guinea pig" was. Should that be a research project for someone?

What he meant was that all of that Phospho-Soda or GoLYTELY, or NULYTELY that you took the day before -- well, it WORKED!!!! LOL And that's all I'll say about THAT!!

I truly laughed out loud when I read your post, Ray.
Michael just had a colonoscopy yesterday, so I marvel at that medical procedure, as well.
As a matter of fact, I heard they have a screening--like an MRI--for a colonsocopy now. It's cheaper than the one Michael just had. But I also understand that if they see something, they still have to do the other procedure to remove any polyps. Still, it might be worth it for the chance of avoiding the gallon of liquid the night before.

You are right on, Wanda. I would do most anything next time to avoid the gallon drink. I should not complain. I am almost 69 and never been in a hospital--interned that is. Knock on wood!!!!

Ray,
Do Nazarenes believe in luck?
I do.
And I agree, if you are 69 without having been a hospital patient, knock on everything. LOL

NEXT TIME -- and this is for anyone who has to go through that wonderful "prep" for a colonoscopy --
Ask your physician if you can use Phospho-Soda as the prep. Only two 4-ounce drinks. And believe me, and I repeat, BELIEVE ME, it works just as good as the gallon drinks. Did I say BELIEVE ME???
Remember this: Phospho-Soda. Over-the-counter. Made by Fleets. Just as good as the gallon stuff. Two small drinks -- mix it with 7-up. Doesn't taste horrible.
Did I say that I have personal knowledge of this? Need I say MORE???? LOL
