What's going on in our backyard?

Mid-morning yesterday these "clumps" of maple tree leaves
appeared in our backyard.

And the "branch" had been cut away from
the main stem at an angle.

What's going on????

I'd guess that tree rats (squirrels) are building nests.

Such a shame to see a grand maple leaf on the ground.

Better get that culprit soon.

If it was in Canada - I would say you have beavers, but it is do high off the ground.
