that our son in law told me about.

That article is a year old, but still troublesome.

How we need God in our World, Anne.

How we need to pray for those who hate Christians...and our governments.

Okay, I'm going to jump in...I have had personal experience with some people of the Muslim faith (My son's best friend and his family last year) and they were nothing like the people depicted in this article. All Muslims that I have met, known or heard about first hand have been wonderful, kind, peace-loving people and are embarassed by these types of extremists. Much like I am embarassed by the Christian groups who picket at Military funerals and homosexual funerals with signs that say "God hates ____!" (you can fill in the blank), or Christians who bomb abortion clinics and kill doctors who perform abortions, or the Christians that supported segregation in our own country and Apartied in Africa...

I guess it surprises me that we are surprised when people want to spread their religion that they believe is the one true religion...we believe that ours is the one true religion so we spend millions of dollars, hours of time and even our lives in order to share the good news...granted we don't kill people for not believing like we do (at least not anymore since the crusades...or when we came to this continent). I just think we shouldn't judge without knowing some people of the Islamic faith personally and also realizing that we have some Christian brothers and sisters that embarrass us with their picket signs too...

While the extremest groups are the groups we most often hear about and there are Muslims who are good caring people there is still reason to be concerned. I read recently that Muslims are not far from being the majority in many European countries. You only have to look at the Muslim countries in the Mid East to know that religious freedom is not something that current Muslim governments support. I think that those of us who are used to having freedom of religion don't realize that it is possible to lose it. We need watch carefully the laws that are being made to make sure we don't lose in the process.

Yes, I agree Christa.

I do not see in this thread where anyone is judging all Muslims as being bad because of the extreme groups.

It frightens me that there are extreme groups that are very dangerous. It frightens me that there are terrorist groups of Muslims that want to destroy Christians....and they are all over our world. Our Christians are being killed by Muslims in some of our African countries as well as in Indonesia.

Other groups frighten me for our country...groups that promote hate and violence and the extreme religious cults.

It is good to be made aware of what is going on in our world without labeling an entire religion or race or group as dangerous.

Not quite. They are 8% of our population in my country. Other countries have similar numbers or less.

I know. In another thread it was suggeted that Canada was coming under the control of 7th Muslim ideology.

Muslims make up about 2% of our population.

I saw this article (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90228826)on the NPR website about a Muslim Chaplain in the U.S. Army. Most of my contact with Muslims is with members of the military, for the most part I would say the article is consistent with my experience.

The article also mentions that there are about 15,000 Muslims in the U.S. Military. If that number is correct, and assuming they mean only active duty military of all four branches, then the Muslim population in the armed forces is about 1/10 of 1% of the total force, if the number is just for the Army, just a guess since it is an interview with an Army Chaplain, then they mak up about 3/10 of 1% of the Army. About 1/2 of 1% of the U.S. population (http://www.teachingaboutreligion.org/Demographics/islam.htm) is Muslim.

The Canadian Society of Muslims (http://muslim-canada.org/) states that about 9/10 of 1% of Canadians identify themselves as Muslims (http://muslim-canada.org/muslimstats.html), but provides estimate numbers bringing that would bring the total to about 3%. By the way, after a quick look at the contents, I think it might serve as a good resource for understanding the different forms of Islam. I've bookmarked it so I can take a better look at it in the future.
