Jon

Jon
I am using (did use flash for the baby pics)Had the flash bouncing
about in the same cadence as Megan was bouncing:basic02
did not use flash with Hayley and the hat pic
she grabbed my hat out of the back car window and put it on
giggling and saying something about Nana's funny hat
so I grabbed the camera out of the trunk..no flash

Judy,

Bounce flash is a great technique to use, you may want to direct some of the flash output off a bounce card directly towards your subject. That will give you a nice highlight in the eyes - which gives them a sparkle and demension.

The hat gave you shade on her face, not a bad thing... but I think the photo could have been better using a little "fill flash". If your camera has a built in flash and you were close enough for it to be effective....

Good thing you have terrific subjects to shoot!

Dear Jon

this is not a sad dear Jon letter, just an admission to being a Nana first and then a photographer, if the photo subject allows.
Now with this hat photo, I grabbed the camera out of the trunk, which added precious time to just how long Hayley would keep Nana's funny hat on her head. Then, had to reset the ISO (as it was set for taking night photos of the harbor) by this time my subject was diverted and weary with the photographer and onto other more entertaining venues.

So

there you have it..the reason I do not do portrait photography, my subjects do not cooperate and hold stil, like mountains and sea cliffs, lighthouses usw.

here are the rest of the pics of the little girl with a big hat

Judy,

Understood completely! I try to not work with small children for that very reason.
