Our son-in-law called me a couple of days ago. He's active duty US Air Force, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base outside of Washington, DC (and an Iraq war vet). When I asked him how they would celebrate the holiday weekend, I was intrigued by his answer. He and some others from his squadron volunteered to go down to the Vietnam Wall EARLY this morning to clean the wall in honor of those represented on this beautiful memorial. Their goal was to get the walls cleaned before the hordes of visitors arrived.

We love him and we're proud of his military service to our country; we're especially proud of his sensitive heart and his volunteer service today.

Honestly, I had never thought of how the wall was kept clean; I'm sure volunteers have done it for years. It is reminiscent of my mother's southern family tradition of going to the family cemetery once a year to clean gravestones. It's a different era but the same commitment to honor loved ones.

Thanks, Ben!

Anita, extend my thanks to your son in law for his volunteering his time and effort to cleaning the wall. My nephew's name is there.
