As a Geographer I am always shocked at the geographic illiteracy of some of the products of the US education system.

Fortunately, I know this country like the back of my hand ..... could someone please help me find the back of my hand?:laughing

Jim, I too am shocked at what today's "enlightened" educational system produces. Consider the following:

The teaching of History in our schools today is well, history.

Ask a teenager and despite great confidence, they won’t quite get it right.

Vikings ---- “They’re 10 point favorites over the Lion’s in Sunday’s game.”

Columbus ---- “That’s that detective dude in the raincoat that my parents used to watch.”

The War to End All Wars ---- “Easy dude, Star Wars.”

Pearl Harbor ---“That’s a little boutique downtown where they sell all kinds of jewelry and stuff.

The Depression -- “Discovering that no Big 10 college will take you ‘cause of low SAT’s”

911 -- “Cool, my manager just went over that this morning – if we get robbed, call 911”

The Patriot Act --- “Trick question! That’s a real old one, I saw that when I was a kid, Mel
Gibson was great; he played this war hero dude….

My favorite line to inflict upon teen age clerks: “In 1493 Columbus sailed the deep blue sea. That’s right, isn’t it?”

Some of my favorite responses to date:

Whatever.
Who?
I don’t know, I wasn’t there.
You can’t blame that one on me.
I’m not very good at history.
You’re wrong, it was 1892.
I’m certain that should be 1942. (Maybe my Uncle served with Columbus during WWII?)

Just because I’m wrong, doesn’t mean that you’re right!

Whew... she was rather dumb, but in a funny sort of way.
Paul's post is right on as far as reflecting what a bunch of today's kids (and adults) know about the world around them.
And that's so sad.

Carefull CCW, I didn't claim that as a "dumb blond" joke. How'd you figure it out?:laughing

It's not just the kids either.

Big announcement out of Detroit today: GM needs to raise $ 15 billion.

Duh, why doen't they try selling cars????

Careful back to you, Paul.
Please notice that I was "politically" correct.
I never called her a dumb blond.
And that may not have been the true color of her hair, anyway.
Before the blonds on the forum jump on me, I want to make a disclaimer.
It didn't have anything to do with the color of her hair.
It's just the age in which we live, sorrowfully.

Ducking...

I think we've both been saved by a....hair!:laughing

That was Kelly Picklar a previous American Idol contestent who now records with a country music label. I'm not sure if she is really that dumb or if it is just part of her public persona. If anyone here stays up late enought to watch Jay Leno, his Jay Walking routine in which he asks random people on the sidewalk questions about history or current events can be an eye opener of how little people really know about the world around them.

If you thought that was bad, you should read my post about my aunt's experience with this ~ http://www.naznet.com/community/showthread.php?t=21182

This show drives me nuts. I watched it once and thought I'd vomit. Haven't watched it since for reasons like this.

Just listen to Sean Hannitys Man on the Street sometime...when he asks young people on the streets of NY City who the President is or VP or Condi Rice or who is running for Pres. It is hilarious because a lot of teens cant even tell you who is President.

Although my wife claims that if you have to explain a joke it's just not worth it, I'll try just this once.

It was not on accident that I addressed Cecil as CCW. For all of you that don't live in Detroit, CCW refers to a permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon.

In his case, the concealed weapon is his pen (figuratively) or his keyboard (litteraly).

Now I know how Dennis Miller must feel .... and I'm not going to explain that one!

So that's what did it, eh Nelson?

I've been nuts longer that that show's been around!

I want you to know however, that I have not lost my mind -- I merely sold it on eBay!:laughing

I have just been in contact with the director of the Community Education program for Boise Public Schools in regards to the courses I will be offering the three sessions this coming school year, Survey of World Geography and Thematic Survey of US History. I am trying to do my part to reduce the problem discussed above. In fact a picture of me and a write up are to be included in this next term's catalogue.

To me teaching is the best of good clean fun.

In his case, the concealed weapon is his pen (figuratively) or his keyboard (literally).

Wanna see my permit?
Remember, I live in Texas.:q)
Gotta have our shootin' irons. (NOT)
But, at times, my pen and/or keyboard may be loaded. :laughing

Paul, I like your sense of humor.... and play on words.

I guess that we have hi-jacked ole NEB's thread, huh?
